FIREFIGHTER/EMT

Firefighter/EMT – Probation This is a technical position concerning work in the protection of life and property in an emergency and hazardous environment. The firefighter/EMT is responsible for handling and treating patients in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort, and for adhering to instructions provided by the Medical Director, physicians, nurses, or paramedics as established by hospital and County policies and procedures and level of training attained. Qualifications: High school graduate or its equivalent, at least 18 years of age. State certified Emergency Medical Technician and certified Firefighter as required by Florida State statutes. Valid Florida Driver License and EVOC certification required before operating County‑owned vehicles. Physical examination prior to employment; must meet NFPA 1582 and Florida Statutes Chapter 633.34. American Heart Association or Red Cross CPR card; AIDS awareness course; other relevant certifications. Pay and Benefits: Starting base rate: $21.70 per hour / $65,067 per year (upon ratification by Union and approval by BOCC). 80 hours holiday pay; 1.5 times per hour for holidays worked. Annual 3% cost of living adjustment. 5% longevity raise every 5 years. $2 per hour transport stipend for dual‑certified FF/PMs. $0.75 per hour transport stipend for dual‑certified FF‑EMTs. Role Description: Perform specialized public safety work in the protection of life and property through general firefighting duties and emergency operations. Inspect buildings and facilities for safety hazards upon request of owner or occupant. Learn and abide by all Fire Department Standard Operational Guidelines, general orders, and risk management procedures. Participate in training sessions dealing with rescue and emergency situations and maintain a high level of job proficiency. Take regular turns in housekeeping of living quarters and maintenance and groundskeeping of the station. Respond to emergency calls and provide assistance on motor vehicle accidents, structure fires, and wildland fires. Perform ALS interventions and transport medical emergencies as needed (if certified as a paramedic). Operate fire equipment as emergencies and conditions demand. Perform repairs, inspections, cleaning, and testing of apparatus daily. Complete all necessary documentation. Lay supply lines, pull hoses, operate hydrants, perform other fire apparatus tasks when required. Conduct search and rescue in 2‑person teams or work alone. Respond to emergency notices, don safety equipment, perform extrication, patient care, and firefighting duties. Use rescue saws, pry bars, hux bars, and other forcible entry tools as necessary. Perform ventilation of structure, ladder use, roof cutting, and other structural tasks. Apply water and foam application principles and perform firefighting operations. Provide excellent customer service to the public and other County employees. Implement the organization’s guiding principles and core values. Perform other related job duties as assigned. Supervision: This position has no supervisory responsibility. General supervision is received from the Fire Chief or his authorized representative. Support is received from the station lieutenant or captain, or the District Chief acting as shift supervisor. Physical Demands: The work requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employees are required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear; and are exposed to extreme weather conditions, loud noises, fumes, noxious particles, hazardous diseases, and potentially explosive or toxic substances. Work Environment: Employee duties are performed inside the designated zone in Marion County Fire Department: fire stations, streets, forest areas, private homes or businesses. Majority of duties are performed outside at varying heights, elevations, and terrain with exposure to extreme weather conditions. Operations expose employees to adverse or hazardous environments and potential exposure to explosives, toxins, radiological particles (including mutagens and teratogens), and excessive vibration. Qualifications (Firefighter I‑V): Education required from HS/GED to Bachelor’s Degree preferred for higher levels. Training courses required: Emergency Medical Technician Curriculum, probationary period requirements, Incident Management System, Paramedic Curriculum (when applicable), vehicle extrication, hazardous materials operations, S‑130, S‑190, S‑205, S‑330, I‑200, I‑300, firefighting tactics and strategies I‑II, apparatus operations, fire prevention practices, paramedic or industrial rescue equivalence, PALS or PEP (medics). Licenses or certifications: Valid Florida driver’s license; EVOC; State of Florida Certificate of Compliance as Firefighter II; American Heart Association or Red Cross CPR card and infection control course; Florida State certified Emergency Medical Technician; Advanced Cardiac Life Support if certified as paramedic. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Understand, follow, and write reports according to written and oral instructions. Maintain effective working relationships, solve problems, interpret written instructions. Knowledge of fire behavior, extinguishment, SCBA, rescue operations, emergency equipment, safety procedures. Ability to use ladders, forcible entry tools, advanced life support, and basic life support techniques. Respond calmly and quickly during emergencies; maintain composure under stress; cooperate with teamwork. Valid Florida Driver License; EVOC before operating County‑owned vehicles. Physical examination prior to employment; must meet NFPA 1582 and Florida Statutes Chapter 633.34. American Heart Association or Red Cross CPR card; basic and advanced cardiac life support certification; other relevant certifications. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) This role is focused on providing technical and specialized work functions associated with medical care during emergencies. Responsibilities include responding to emergency calls, evaluating scenes, initiating basic life support, providing patient care, and documenting all activities. Essential Functions: Respond to emergency calls relayed by dispatchers. Drive ambulance to site using optimal routes. Assist paramedics and perform treatment as instructed. Evaluate scene, determine nature and extent of illness or injury. Initiate basic life support, CPR, spinal immobilization, oxygen, triage. Use medical equipment based on competency level. Follow infection control protocols and dispose of biohazard waste. Communicate with dispatcher, request additional services. Assist in patient transport decisions and document care. Assist with ambulance maintenance, inventory, decontamination, and testing of equipment. Provide excellent customer service, communicate effectively with the public, and implement the organization’s core values. Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Florida State driver’s license; EVOC required. Florida State Certified Emergency Medical Technician. American Heart Association or Red Cross CPR certification. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are similar to the Firefighter/EMT role, with emphasis on EMS procedures, basic and advanced life support, medical documentation, and communication skills.
