Job Summary This position is a supervisory probationary role for Firefighter/EMT and Firefighter/Paramedic officials in Marion County Fire Rescue. Responsibilities involve protecting life and property, providing emergency medical care, and operating fire‑fighting equipment under hazardous conditions. Responsibilities Firefighter/EMT - Probation Technical duties to protect life and property in emergencies, treat patients per medical orders, and perform basic fire‑fighting and equipment maintenance. Operates under rota shifts, often 24 hours, including after‑hours and holiday responses. Handle and treat patients safely and comfortably with adherence to Medical Director, physician, nurse, or paramedic instructions. Consistently inspect buildings for safety hazards. Operate and maintain all fire equipment, leading daily inspections, cleaning, and repairs. Provide assistance for motor‑vehicle accidents, structure and wildland fires. Perform ALS interventions and transport medical emergencies as needed (if certified). Respond to emergencies requiring extrication, patient care, and firefighting at varying heights and terrains. Assist in search and rescue, ventilation, forcible entry, and salvage operations. Operate heavy equipment safely, including loading and unloading of attack lines and use of hydraulic tools. Provide excellent customer service to the public and county employees. Execute fire department standard operational guidelines, training, and risk‑management procedures. Maintain documentation, reports, and records for all job functions. Firefighter/Paramedic - Probation Technical duties to protect life and property while providing quality medical care. Responsibilities mirror Firefighter/EMT with additional paramedic care. Respond to emergency calls, navigate to scene, and assess patient conditions. Initiate basic and advanced life support, including CPR, airway management, monitoring, and medication administration. Monitor patients during transport to medical facilities. Maintain infection control protocols and handle biohazardous waste. Document care records, operational reports, and patient status during transport. Assist in patient lifts, transfers, and judgments for final destination selection. Participate in legal, court and investigative activities as required. Maintain knowledge of emergency medicine protocols and equipment. Benefits Starting base rate: $25.02 per hour, $75,022 per year. 80 hourly holiday pay (1.5x hourly wage). Annual 3% Cost‑of‑Living Adjustment. 5% Longevity raise every 5 years. $2 per hour transport stipend for dual‑certified FF/PMs. $0.75 per hour transport stipend for dual‑certified FF/EMTs. Standard benefits package (health, dental, vision, retirement, paid holiday, overtime). Qualifications Firefighter High school diploma or GED. Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred. Florida Certified Firefighter (as per State statutes). Completed Emergency Medical Technician Curriculum. Pass State Exam for NFPA 1582 and physical requirements (Chapter 633.34). Valid Florida Driver License; EVOC before operating County vehicles. Completion of all probationary period requirements. Medical and safety courses (AIDS awareness, emergency vehicle operation). Successful completion of vehicle extrication course within six months of hire. Basic and advanced cardiac life‑support certification. Meeting guidelines for Florida Certified Firefighter II (state compliant). Paramedic High school diploma or GED. Florida Certified Paramedic (State statutes). Successful completion of provisional paramedic program. Successful completion of courses for Firefighter I (Vehicle extrication, basic and advanced incident management, hazmat). Certified in advanced cardiac life support (ALS) and pediatric advanced life support (PALS) if applicable. Valid Florida Driver License; EVOC before operating County vehicles. Complete physical exam and NFPA 1582 requirements. Undergo state‑certified training (Fire Service Course Delivery, etc.). Licenses & Certifications Florida State Certified Firefighter. Florida State Certified EMT/Paramedic. American Heart Association or Red Cross CPR card. Infection control course. Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification. State of Florida Certificate of Compliance as Firefighter II. EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator Course). Vehicle extrication course. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Read instructions, safety rules, and manuals. Write routine reports and documents. Communicate effectively with employees, public, and other agencies. Perform manual multitasking under hazardous conditions. Knowledge of fire behavior, extinguishment methods, SCBA usage, rescue operations. Knowledge of emergency medical protocols, equipment, and patient transport. Physical strength and endurance; ability to lift, carry, climb, crawl, and operate heavy equipment. Strong mental focus, quick decision‑making and careful judgment under stress. Physical Demands Work requires heavy lifting (up to 100 lbs), frequent exertion, and sustained physical activity including standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and operating equipment. Employees may need to maintain a 50% compliance with NFPA 1582 and other regulation requirements. Work Environment Work performed inside and outside the station, at emergency scenes, forest areas, private homes, and county streets under varied terrain. Employees are exposed to extreme weather, loud noises, fumes, shocks, and hazardous materials (toxins, explosives, radiological particles, infectious diseases). The environment requires adaptation to different heights and hazardous surroundings.
