Afghan Family Liaison – Francis C. Hammond Middle School Alexandria City Public School District, Francis C. Hammond Middle School – Alexandria, Virginia. Starting Date: Immediately Job ID: 5801494 | Position Type: Full-Time | Salary: $22.24 to $27.36 Job Description The Afghan Family Liaison promotes the successful integration of students and parents into the school community and focuses on family engagement efforts specific to Afghan families at our ACPS schools. The liaison creates a welcoming environment for families; conducts outreach through various communications to empower parents/guardians to be actively engaged in their children's education; organizes family involvement events and activities; manages school-based volunteer opportunities; and works with the principal to address parent/guardian issues and concerns. The Parent Liaison is supervised and evaluated by the School Principal/Administration with feedback from the Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Manager. Responsibilities Create welcoming environments for all families, with a focus on Afghan families who speak Dari or Pashto. Conduct outreach through a variety of communications to empower all families to be actively engaged in their children’s education. Respond to Afghan families’ concerns via Parent Square and telephone. Connect Afghan families to information, resources and services available within the school division (e.g., ParentSquare, Student Services, Special Ed, Advanced Academic Services). Work with administrators to address issues and concerns presented by Afghan families. Review and translate flyers and documents as needed. Support family engagement in schools and the community, including out-of-school family engagement programs as needed (up to 2–3 nights a week). Serve as a cultural broker and facilitator in schools and the community as needed. Essential Functions Establish trusting relationships and serve as a point of contact for families. Facilitate “Welcome to ACPS” orientations to new families. Assist families in navigating the school system. Advocate for families as appropriate. Coordinate services with other school staff (Student Support Team, English Learner department, special education staff, teachers and administrators). Provide information on eligible services and encourage participation. Offer community referrals to families as needed. Assist families with the ACPS volunteer process and online applications. Ensure interpreter services are available at parent‑teacher conferences, school meetings, and requested activities. Display multilingual signs, bulletin boards, and other displays at school entrances/lobbies. Attend FACE training and meetings as required. Qualifications Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Certificates & Licenses: Valid driver’s license preferred. Professional experience working with families, community‑based outreach programs, schools, or non‑profits with increasing responsibility. Experience working with culturally diverse communities. High proficiency in Dari or Pashto. Reliable transportation to travel to schools and community sites. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members. Understanding and sensitivity for diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio‑economic backgrounds. Ability to determine and assess confidential material and maintain confidentiality. Excellent time‑management, customer‑service, and interpersonal skills. Flexible schedule, including up to three evenings a week and weekend availability. Ability to work in a high‑paced environment and use good judgment. Passion and commitment to the mission of FACE Center and ACPS. Proficiency with Microsoft products, smartphones, and social media. Monthly data collection and entry. Clearances Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance. Tuberculosis Skin Test. Public Health Compliance Must follow safety and health protocols.
