Summary
Midtown Community School (MCS) exists to foster a culture of belonging and academic excellence that supports the development of well-rounded individuals.
The role of Teacher-Special Education (Mild-Moderate) is providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing special education students' success in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.
This job is distinguished from similar jobs by the following characteristics: This position differs from the job of Teacher-Special Education (Mild-Moderate) in that the handicapping conditions of students are more involved. Some of your students may be wheel-chair bound, brain damaged, have severe behavioral issues, severe health concerns, and generally unable to function in a regular school setting independently.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Adapts classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
- Administers developmental testing programs, subject specific assessments, motor development, etc. for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
- Administers, under supervision, first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g. tube feeding, toileting, diapering, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for students as assigned.
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations, student's achievements, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
- Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals (e.g. behavioral, motor development and communication skills, academic needs, vocational abilities, etc.) for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration and documentation on individual plans.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the student's IEP.
- Counsels students for the purpose of improving performance, health status, problem solving techniques and a variety of personal issues.
- Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
- Differentiates classroom work for each student for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
- Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
- Instructs students and provides instructional and behavioral supports for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
- Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic lists and records (e.g. daily log of activities, behavior or medical logs, progress, referrals, etc.) for the purpose of providing required information and/or documentation.
- Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, fields, cafeteria, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
- Participates in a variety of meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
- Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEP's evaluation reports, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
- Provide physical management when required for the purpose of avoiding a crisis or imminent danger.
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. other teachers, parents, administrators, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction.
- Tracks and monitors student progress for a caseload of students for the purpose of ensuring appropriate progress on established IEP goals.
- Attends meetings & in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Qualifications & Traits
The ideal Special Education Teacher (Mild-Moderate) will have:
- A bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) and appropriate Missouri Special Education Certification (“K-12 Mild/Moderate Cross Categorical Special Education” preferred)
- Experience (minimum two years preferred) teaching special education in a K-8 setting
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills
- Experience working in a socio-economic, racial and culturally diverse classroom setting
- An ability to effectively manage and instruct both small and large groups of students
- An exhibited ability to work with children in a caring and respectful manner in order to create a joyful, caring classroom environment where instructional time includes community building, conflict resolution, skill-building, and empowering students to be peacemakers and agents for positive social change
- Knowledge of and experience with Special Education related computer programs to document services, notes, write IEP's, and run all necessary reports.
- Knowledge of all compliance-oriented Special Education timelines, procedures, and processes (generally and within MO DESE)
- Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and a can-do attitude
- Willingness to explore additional school responsibilities (before/after school care and classes, committee involvement, etc.); stipends may be available for such responsibilities.
- Fluency in Spanish is preferred.

This position will be placed on the “B/M/D" Faculty Salary Schedule.
