Paraeducator - Non-Mainstream Special Education - Structured Program

POSITION HOURS AND PAY

This position is for 6.5 hours per day at 178 days per year. * 7 hours per day for 4 days for the first year and 2 days each year following until certification is completed. Position pay: PSE Salary Schedule Lev5 - $24.76 (25-26 PSE SALARY SCHEDULE)

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Official hire date is based on School Board approval and may change without notice. Contact HR with any questions. Required training: Must complete Right Response Training and receive qualifications within 3-5 months. Renewal of Right Response certification must be completed annually prior to expiration date. Must complete the online Autism Spectrum Disorder course within 3 months of hire. Minimum Employment Requirements Must be 18 years of age. Hold high school diploma or its equivalent. One of the following: Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment. AA degree or higher. Earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an accredited institution. Completion of registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries. Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program. Unverified transcripts may be provided but official ones required upon hire. Description Assist certificated staff with instructional and non‑instructional activities for non‑mainstreamed special education students in a self‑contained classroom. Duties include: Instructing students individually or in small groups. Assisting with basic life skills, personal care, toileting, feeding and communication development. Supervising student behavior activities and maintaining classroom hygiene. Job Summary The role may perform various duties, listed below: Instructs moderately to severely handicapped students; provides encouragement, reinforcement and guidance for educational objectives. Communicates with certificated staff about student progress; adjusts methods accordingly. Assists in maintaining records, logs, charts for assessment of student progress. Attends to student physical and safety needs; monitors medical risks and corrects behaviors. Assists in toileting, personal hygiene and bathing routines. Supports developing interpersonal and personal skills, feeding and social meals. Facilitates basic living skills, pre‑vocational activities and communication skills integration. Maintains effective communication with students, staff and parents. Provides physical assistance such as lifting or positioning, follows therapeutic equipment procedures. Monitors need for first aid and refers for treatment. Maintains cleanliness and hygiene of classroom and implements equipment. Alerts qualified staff to student problems. Prepares and modifies materials for student use and enrichment. Duplicates, collates and distributes materials; operates office equipment. Maintains physical appearance and supplies in classroom. Serves on district committees and departmental work teams; models appropriate conduct. Performs related duties consistent with scope and intent of position. Reporting Relationships Reports to the school principal or assigned administrator; receives guidance from certificated staff. Mental Demands Frequent interruptions; diverse student behaviors; possible exposure to physically or emotionally challenging situations. Physical Demands Exposure to ordinary infectious diseases; noise levels; required lifting and positioning; work in non‑routine positions; attending to hygiene; possible exposure to bodily fluids; outdoor supervision in inclement weather. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Experience working with school‑age children and special‑needs students preferred. Skills required include non‑violent crisis intervention, development and use of PECS, visual schedules and supports, Social Stories, universal precautions, toilet teaching, understanding of child development, autism spectrum, and sensory processing. Completion of the Autism Spectrum Disorder course. For Title One and Title One School‑wide Special Education positions, associate degree, or proof of Washington State Paraeducator Assessment, or two years of higher education per Federal No Child Left Behind Act. Allowable Substitutions Not applicable. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Reading, writing and communication. Basic subject knowledge (reading and math). Warm and confident manner with students. Flexibility to changing assignments. Organizing activities. Following and giving instructions. Fairness and consistency with students. Implement behavior management techniques. Implement instruction techniques. Understanding of behavior and learning disorders. Knowledge of student safety rules and procedures. Calmness when schedules change or students become agitated. Basic computer skills for instruction and record keeping. Operation of general office machines. Establish and maintain effective relationships with students and staff. Diffuse situations and resolve conflicts. Confidentiality requirements. Licenses / Special Requirements Fingerprinting and background check for convictions involving minors. Training in district infection control plan. First aid and CPR certification may be required. Hepatitis‑B immunization offered. Right Response Training must be completed within first 3‑5 months of hire.
