Senior Property Accountant

Our client is a mission-driven real estate organization managing a growing portfolio of affordable single-family, multifamily, and commercial properties across New Jersey. They are seeking an experienced Senior Property Accountant to join their finance team and play a key role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of financial operations across 500+ units.

Responsibilities:

Month-End & Reporting

• Lead the month-end close process, including journal entries, recurring entries review, and GL reclassifications
• Prepare and review monthly and quarterly financial reporting packages prior to Controller submission
• Analyze operating expenses against budget and pro forma; provide variance commentary to the property management team
• Tie Gross Potential Rent (GPR) to rent roll

Accounts Payable & Receivable

• Review weekly property payable reports and approve invoices based on cash availability
• Reconcile all accounts receivable monthly and run weekly payable reports to ensure timely payment
• Prepare tenant billings and manage inter-company cash transfer requests

Reconciliations & Compliance

• Perform bank and security deposit reconciliations; maintain Yardi Voyager with up-to-date records
• Record and manage property taxes and government-level financial matters
• Prepare subcontractor 1099s and other IRS documentation
• Compile quarterly audit workpapers and support the annual audit process
• Monitor and verify bad debt expense recording

Budgeting & Policy

• Assist with annual budget preparation and re-forecasts across all properties
• Maintain and update schedules for debt service, management fees, cash balances, and reserves
• Support development and implementation of accounting policies; update the department procedure manual
• Participate in the Yardi implementation team and monitor system updates

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of property accounting experience, with strong hands-on month-end close, bank reconciliation, and audit support skills
• BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field preferred
• Proficiency in Yardi Voyager or comparable property management software required
• Solid knowledge of general ledger, balance sheet reconciliations, and full-cycle AP/AR
• Experience with federal grant compliance is a plus
• Strong Microsoft Office and Excel skills
• Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical abilities
• Ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a deadline-driven environment
