CNC Lathe Machinist

The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for the setup and operation of CNC lathes and multi-axis lathes to manufacture precision aerospace components in accordance with engineering drawings and work instructions. This role ensures parts are produced within tight tolerances, maintains part integrity throughout the production cycle, and actively contributes to continuous improvement of machining processes.

Responsibilities:

• Set up CNC lathes with Fanuc controls and operate all assigned equipment proficiently on a daily basis.
• Perform multi-axis lathe setup and operation to produce complex aerospace components.
• Establish and follow efficient production processes to keep parts within print tolerance and maintain quality standards.
• Follow work instructions, setup sheets, and production schedules accurately throughout the setup and machining process.
• Inspect parts as they come off the machine using micrometers and other precision measuring tools to verify dimensional accuracy.
• Perform deburring operations as needed during production to meet part finish and quality requirements.
• Bore jaws on a 3-jaw chuck and perform related workholding setup confidently and correctly.
• Use extensive knowledge of commonly used M and G codes to adjust and optimize machine programs.
• Read and interpret blueprints, including GD&T Level 3, to understand dimensional requirements and tolerances.
• Hold extremely tight tolerances, including as little as ±0.0001 total tolerance, as required by aerospace specifications.
• Observe machines during operation, identify issues, and take appropriate action to prevent defects or downtime.
• Perform all necessary program edits at the machine to improve performance and resolve machining issues within established guidelines.
• Provide feedback to programming and engineering on potential issues, improvements, and process optimization opportunities.
• Apply knowledge of 5S and Lean Manufacturing principles to maintain an organized, efficient, and safe work area.
• Use understanding of material properties and MBD (Model-Based Definition) to make appropriate machining decisions.
• Apply knowledge of Boeing BAC specifications and aerospace industry standards when applicable.
• Calculate plating tolerances on diameters and threads to ensure final dimensions meet specification after finishing processes.
• Use Microsoft Office and basic computer skills to access work instructions, record data, and communicate as needed.
• Apply strong geometry and trigonometry skills to set up parts, calculate dimensions, and perform required conversions.
• Read, write, analyze, and interpret work instructions, drawings, and procedure manuals in English, and communicate effectively with team members.
• Solve practical problems on the shop floor and interpret a variety of written, oral, diagram, or schedule-based instructions.
• Mentor less experienced team members by sharing technical knowledge and best practices when requested.
• Perform other related duties as required and assigned to support production and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills:

• Minimum 5 years of experience running CNC lathes, including multi-axis type work.
• Strong proficiency in setting up and operating CNC lathes with Fanuc controls.
• Extensive knowledge of commonly used M and G codes for CNC programming and operation.
• Ability to perform multi-axis lathe setup and operation for complex aerospace components.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints, including GD&T Level 3.
• Ability to hold extremely tight tolerances, including as little as ±0.0001 total tolerance.
• Proficiency in using micrometers and other precision measuring tools for in-process inspection.
• Solid understanding of material properties and how they affect machining processes.
• Knowledge of 5S and Lean Manufacturing principles and their application in a machine shop environment.
• Strong geometry knowledge and ability to apply trigonometry functions in machining setups and calculations.
• Ability to convert metric to inch and perform decimal-to-fraction conversions with impeccable decimal placement.
• Language skills sufficient to read, write, analyze, and interpret work instructions, drawings, and procedure manuals in English.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions in a production environment.
• Reasoning ability to solve practical problems and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Basic computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office applications.
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality parts.
• Willingness to learn and adapt to new processes, technologies, and standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

• High school diploma required.
• Vocational training in machining or a related field is a plus.
• College-based classes related to manufacturing, machining, or engineering are a plus.
• Previous on-the-job training (OJT) in CNC machining is beneficial.
• Understanding of Model-Based Definition (MBD) and its application in manufacturing.
• Knowledge of Boeing BAC specifications is preferred.
• Experience in the aerospace industry is preferred.
• Experience with calculations of plating tolerances on diameters and threads is preferred.
• Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD/CAM tools is beneficial.
• Experience with mechanical systems, machine operation, and changeover/set-up activities.
• Mentorship skills and the ability to support the development of other machinists.
• Completion of a machining aptitude test or similar assessment is beneficial.

Work Environment:

This role is based in a machine shop environment with exposure to noise and dust typical of CNC machining operations. Appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety shoes and safety glasses, is required. The shop is clean, organized, and aligned with 5S and Lean Manufacturing principles, with modern CNC lathes and multi-axis equipment in use. Work is performed on the production floor using precision measuring tools, computers for accessing instructions and recording data, and standard office software. The environment emphasizes safety, quality, and efficiency, with clear procedures and structured workflows.

Job Type & Location:

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Everett, WA.

Pay and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $55.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
