In January 2025, Torch entered into a joint venture partnership with Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners to develop, construct, and operate our existing pipeline of projects while expanding our portfolio through new development and acquisitions.

As Torch continues to grow, we are building an internal Engineering Team that serves as the technical backbone of project execution, risk management, innovation, and engineering excellence across our portfolio.

About the Engineering Team

The Engineering Team serves as Torch's technical owner's engineering and project integration group.

The team's purpose is not simply to review consultant deliverables, but to develop an independent understanding of project opportunities, constraints, risks, and tradeoffs so Torch can make better technical, commercial, and execution decisions throughout the project lifecycle.

Team members combine discipline-specific expertise with systems-level thinking to help transform development-stage opportunities into successful operating assets. The team routinely evaluates tradeoffs between engineering, constructability, permitting, schedule, cost, financing, and long-term operational performance to identify solutions that maximize overall project value.

The team also supports engineering innovation through internal automation, software development, AI tools, and emerging technologies that improve project outcomes and decision-making.

Position Summary

Torch is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support utility-scale energy projects from early-stage feasibility through final design, construction, commissioning, and operations.

Successful candidates understand that utility-scale energy projects are systems, not individual disciplines. They are comfortable evaluating tradeoffs between equipment selection, energy production, constructibility, project economics, schedule, reliability, and long-term operations. Whether reviewing a collector system design, evaluating battery technology, optimizing a DC/AC ratio, or supporting procurement decisions, they focus on maximizing overall project value rather than optimizing a single engineering metric.

This is a hands-on engineering role. Team members are expected to actively perform engineering analyses, evaluate technical alternatives, validate third-party assumptions, investigate complex project challenges, and develop tools and workflows that improve decision-making. At the same time, they must be capable of translating technical findings into clear recommendations and helping project teams make informed decisions.

The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in utility-scale PV and BESS systems while maintaining a strong understanding of development, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations.

This role works closely with Development Project Managers, EPC Project Managers, construction teams, operations personnel, utilities, equipment vendors, and external engineering consultants to advance projects from feasibility through commercial operation.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Engineering

• Serve as the electrical engineering subject matter expert across utility-scale energy projects.
\n
• Develop conceptual, preliminary, and targeted engineering designs where internal engineering efforts provide value to project development, risk reduction, execution planning, or technical decision-making.
\n
• Perform internal engineering analyses focused on project feasibility, constructability, cost optimization, risk reduction, and technical due diligence.
\n
• Evaluate PV and BESS systems to optimize project value, reliability, constructability, and long-term operational performance.
\n
• Participate in technology evaluations, equipment selection, vendor assessments, and design optimization efforts involving PV modules, inverters, PCS equipment, transformers, battery technologies, SCADA systems, communications systems, and electrical BOS equipment.
\n

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Review

\n
• Evaluate engineering decisions through a multidisciplinary lens, balancing electrical, civil, performance, construction, development, and operational objectives.
\n
• Work closely with development, EPC, procurement, finance, construction, and operations teams to identify risks, opportunities, and design improvements early in project development.
\n
• Perform independent engineering evaluations, feasibility studies, alternative analyses, and technical investigations that challenge assumptions, validate third-party recommendations, and provide Torch with an independent technical basis for decision-making.
\n
• Review EPC and consultant engineering deliverables for quality, completeness, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
\n
• Collaborate with EPC Project Managers to resolve RFIs, change orders, design clarifications, and field issues during construction.
\n
• Assist in preparation and review of technical specifications, scopes of work, contractor qualifications, procurement packages, and technical bid evaluations.
\n
• Provide concise reporting to internal stakeholders regarding engineering deliverables, project risks, schedule impacts, and key decision points.
\n

Continuous Improvement and Innovation

\n
• Support the development of internal engineering capabilities that strengthen Torch's long-term competitive advantage.
\n
• Identify opportunities to improve engineering quality, consistency, and efficiency through automation, software development, AI tools, data analytics, and other emerging technologies.
\n
• Contribute to lessons learned programs and continuous improvement initiatives across development, engineering, construction, and operations.
\n

Qualifications

Required

\n
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
\n
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; PE license preferred. Candidates with strong renewable energy experience who are not yet PE-licensed will be considered with the expectation of obtaining licensure within 6 months.
\n
• Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
\n
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to present technical recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, including executive leadership.
\n
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving, collaborative environment.
\n
• Ability to travel to project sites as needed (approximately 20%).
\n

Preferred Experience

\n
• 7-12 years of electrical engineering experience, including at least 5 years directly involved in design of utility-scale solar PV and/or battery energy storage projects.
\n
• Experience supporting projects from feasibility through final design, construction, commissioning, and operations.
\n
• Hands-on engineering experience performing design, calculations, modeling, technical evaluations, or engineering software and tool development -- rather than solely managing consultants or reviewing deliverables.
\n
• Experience reviewing EPC contracts and engineering deliverables.
\n
• Proficiency in utility-scale PV and BESS electrical engineering, including: photovoltaic system design and optimization; BESS design and integration; PV module, inverter, PCS, transformer, and major equipment selection; control systems, protection relays, and communication protocols; DC collection system design and eBOS; medium-voltage collection system design; utility interconnection integration; design package development from conceptual through IFC; construction support and commissioning; equipment procurement support; and electrical studies including cable ampacity, load flow, grounding, short circuit, and arc flash.
