The candidate will carry out tasks in the research project "Reasons of the others: concession and counter-argument in polylogues (ReCOUNT)" led by dr hab. Marcin Koszowy. The successful candidate’s research activity will involve working closely with the PI in the analysis of concessions and counter-arguments. The postdoctoral researcher's main tasks will consist of analysing concessions and counterarguments. This task will amount to analysing natural language texts for the sake of identifying concession and disagreement instances, clustering them into types and creating corpora of annotated concessions and disagreements. The project work associated with this position also includes developing a theoretical model of concessions and counterarguments based on the collected data. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project, the candidate should have background in argumentation theory and philosophy of language. Knowledge of the ethical aspects of persuasive communication, and computer-based discourse analysis tools will also be an asset. The candidate should be able to work independently while collaborating closely with both the project manager and the project team. The candidate is expected to co-author several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as actively participate in national and international scientific events (conferences, workshops). The candidate is also expected to diligently fulfill the organizational duties assigned by the Principal Investigator for the benefit of the project and the Department of Philosophy and Ethics in Administration. Since the project deals with fundamental aspects of disagreement, a good understanding of argumentative aspects of discourse, and linguistic markers to signal various forms of disagreement is essential. Moreover, familiarity with computer-assisted tools for discourse analysis, as well as familiarity with ethical aspects of persuasive discourse is highly beneficial. Finally, the candidate should be able to work autonomously while also collaborating closely with the Principal Investigator and the team. Specific Requirements A solid background in theoretical foundations of argumentation theory and philosophy of language. Documented research experience in the study of language and discourse. A good command of English to enable independent work in an international research team and the publication of research results in reputable journals. Familiarity with ethical aspects of persuasive discourse and computer-based discourse analysis tools will be an additional asset. Eligibility criteria The doctoral degree must be awarded in the year of employment in the project or within seven years before January 1 of the year of employment in the project. This period may be extended for long-term (over 90 days) documented medical leave or rehabilitation leave granted due to incapacity for work. Furthermore, this period may be extended by the number of months of parental leave granted under the Labor Code, and in the case of women, by 18 months for each born or adopted child, depending on the preferred method of accounting for career breaks. The candidate must not have had the principal investigator as their research supervisor or auxiliary supervisor of their PhD dissertation. The doctoral degree must be obtained at a different university than the Warsaw University of Technology, or the candidate must have completed a continuous, documented postdoctoral internship lasting at least 10 months at an institution different from the Warsaw University of Technology and in a country other than Poland. The selected candidate must be employed for a period of at least 6 months. During the period of receiving remuneration, the candidate may not be receiving any other remuneration paid from the funds granted to research projects under NCN calls under the heading of direct costs. During the period of receiving remuneration, the candidate may not be employed based on an employment contract in another entity, including an employer based outside Poland. During the period of receiving remuneration, the candidate may not receive olod-age pension from the social security system. Selection process The Competition Committee, appointed by the Rector of the Warsaw University of Technology, reviews all applications submitted in response to the competition, based on the documentation provided. The Committee reserves the right to conduct interviews with selected candidates. Following its deliberations, the Competition Committee may recommend a candidate for employment or declare that none of the applicants meet the required qualifications. The Committee communicates the outcome of the competition to the Dean, providing a detailed justification of its decision. The result of the competition procedure, along with the rationale, is announced and made publicly available for a period of 30 days through the following channels: Official notice boards at the Warsaw University of Technology, The University’s Public Information Bulletin (BIP) website, The website of the Ministry supervising higher education institutions. The final result of the competition, including the Committee’s justification, is submitted to the Rector by the Dean of the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences. The recommendation issued by the Competition Committee constitutes a formal prerequisite for initiating the employment procedure. This procedure is launched by the Dean of the Faculty. The project team currently consists of six members carrying out a range of tasks at the intersection of theoretical modelling of reservations and counterarguments in polylogues, empirical analysis of discussions on artificial intelligence with a view to identifying instances and types of concessions and counterarguments, the development of corpora tailored to these analyses to enable the creation of an empirically grounded typology of concessions, as well as a typology of the argumentative and counterargumentative structures. At the current stage, the project has completed the development of a pilot corpus, which now serves as the basis for formulating the annotation guidelines for the full-scale corpus study to be carried out and further developed by the project team.
