Job Overview The practice of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is performed by radiologic technologists responsible for the use of radiofrequencies (RF’s) within a magnetic field on humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes. A MRI technologist performs MRI procedures utilizing MRI scanners and power injectors producing cross sectional and 3D images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. MRI technologists may also assist with interventional and therapeutic procedures and perform complex imaging reformatting. MRI integrates scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction and compassionate care resulting in diagnostic information. A MRI technologist recognizes patient conditions, assesses and monitors patient vital signs, and takes appropriate actions in emergency situations essential for successful completion of a procedure and to maintain quality patient care. Responsibilities Perform MRI procedures, including cross sectional and 3D imaging. Assist with interventional and therapeutic procedures and perform complex imaging reformatting. Recognize patient conditions, assess and monitor vital signs, and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Maintain high accuracy in positioning and sequence techniques. Apply magnetic resonance safety principles to minimize risk to patient, self, and others. Select appropriate pulse sequences with consideration of established protocols and factors influencing data acquisition. Determine and/or follow appropriate imaging protocols. Document pertinent exam information in the medical record. Maintain archival storage of imaging exams and associated documents. Assist LIP with specialized interventional MRI procedures and apply appropriate aseptic surgical technique as needed. Maintain records, respect confidentiality, and apply principles of patient safety during all aspects of MRI procedures. Assist and transport patients, relaying and documenting verbal, written, and electronic imaging orders in the patient’s medical record. Corroborate patient’s clinical history with the ordered procedure while ensuring information is documented and available to a licensed independent practitioner (LIP). Verify informed consent and assume responsibility for patient needs before, during, and after procedures. Prepare patients for procedures and provide patient education related to imaging procedures. Apply principles of ALARA to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others. Perform venipuncture per procedural protocol based on imaging order from a licensed independent practitioner. Start and maintain intravenous access per procedural protocol for an LIP. Identify, prepare, and/or administer medications generally associated with diagnostic imaging procedures as prescribed by a LIP. Label all medications per institutional protocol. Evaluate images for technical quality and ensure proper identification is recorded. Identify and manage emergency situations until appropriate emergency team arrives. Educate students and other learners in the radiology environment. Participate and/or perform ongoing quality assurance activities. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) or Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) – ARRT-MRI Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment Current Certification by ARRT-MRI Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) Experience Required One (1) year of previous MRI Technologist work experience Experience Preferred One to three (1-3) years of previous MRI Technologist work experience Previous work experience in an academic medical center environment Education/Training Required Graduation from a JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology recognized by the ARRT; or Graduation from a JRCNMT accredited program in nuclear medicine technology Education/Training Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in Radiologic Technology or closely related field from an accredited program Independent Actions Required Perform or assist the licensed independent practitioner in the completion of all MRI imaging exams, interventional MRI procedures, and therapeutic MRI procedures utilizing all MRI scanners and associated technology on site at VCUHS. Complete imaging exams based on physician written orders, department protocols, and institutional safety standards. Evaluate and react to information contained on the MRI Safety Checklist and the MRI contrast checklist. Prioritize workload based on ordered patient priority. Represent the goals, values, and vision of VCU Health System. Ensure adherence to regulatory standards, health system and department policies, procedures, processes, and guidelines applicable to role. Resolve basic service delivery issues and initiate equipment service calls. Lead technologists may perform “lead technologist” functions such as coordinating work assignments, workflow, and staffing for an assigned shift/area; serve as clinical or technical resource; provide training. Additional Position Requirements Weekend only shifts. Radiologic Technologists are considered “Essential Employees” who may be required to report to work in accordance with the VCUHS Policy.
