Job Summary Location: Methodist Hospital Address: 8303 Dodge St. Omaha, NE Schedule: 6:45 pm-7:15 am – every third weekend Accountable for the delivery of quality care to patients and families according to the individualized needs of the patient. This position will float to the Emergency Department, Cardiovascular Surgery, Cardiac Telemetry, PCU Pulmonary Oncology, PCU Cardiac, Vascular, Thoracic, and ICU units, providing care in high‑acuity environments. Candidates must have a minimum of two years of recent experience in a high‑acuity unit; new graduates will not be considered for this role. Essential Functions Provide appropriate care specific to the age of the patient, ensuring understanding and comfort level as outlined in the Population Specific Criteria. Identify opportunities for and give individualized customer service and patient care according to patient needs. Perform an initial and ongoing assessment to determine the assigned patient’s ongoing nursing care needs. Include data from the patient or significant other(s) in the assessment as appropriate. Prioritize data collection according to the patient’s immediate needs. Use assessment findings in discharge planning. Develop, review, and revise an individualized plan of care to address the patient’s nursing care needs for optimum outcomes. Collaborate with providers and other clinical disciplines as appropriate. Provide teaching specific to the patient’s health care problem. Ensure the care plan reflects continuing care needs and/or referrals for discharge or transfer. Implement interventions that are consistent with the established plan of care in a safe and appropriate manner. Follow nursing protocols and standards of care for the unit. Apply current knowledge in nursing practice based on standards and research literature. Evaluate patient care to determine response to interventions for optimal outcomes. Monitor outcomes and document patient response to interventions. Assess the patient’s capabilities and limitations related to nursing and medical interventions. Monitor the patient and/or significant other(s) ability to manage care needs after dismissal. Provide a complete verbal or written change‑of‑shift report to the oncoming provider, including current care requirements and SBAR content. Recognize and address patient and family capabilities and limitations (physical and mental). Perform technical skills competently and independently to assure patient safety. Learn new skills and equipment within specified areas and time frames. Use correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according to product information and policy and procedure manuals. Follow procedures for obtaining, returning, cleaning, or disposing of equipment and supplies. Maintain professional behavior in attitude, demeanor, and interactions to achieve the organization’s mission. Communicate effectively to solve problems at the personal and unit level. Approach and work professionally with other health professionals, ancillary staff, patients, and families. Take pride in the unit by actively participating in restocking and maintaining a clean environment. Maintain a professional appearance, behavior, and work environment. Maintain competence in the area of experience. Participate in meetings or committees as needed to assist in decisions affecting the area, unit, or organization. Take action to correct, prevent, or minimize risks to the patient, family, or hospital employees. Complete appropriate report forms for any risk incidents. Communicate unresolved issues to appropriate personnel. Work within the scope of practice defined by the State Nurse Practice Act. Observe precautions when administering hazardous medications or handling excreta from patients who received hazardous medications. Review, delegate, and evaluate plans for appropriate utilization of staff at all levels per the State Nurse Practice Act and professional standards of practice. Ensure the right task, person, and communication are addressed for each situation. Act responsibly for human and other resources. Charge accurately for the use of supplies and equipment per policy. Schedule 24 or 36 hours per week, every third weekend. Education Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing, required by December 31, 2020 if hired after 2012 or five years from hire date for nurses hired after 2015. For MFH: Graduate from an accredited Diploma School of Nursing/College of Nursing with an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (ASN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; BSN preferred. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. Successful completion of annual mandatory education requirements. National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification training required by completion of orientation. For NMH Critical Care: NIH Stroke Scale training or proof of training required within the first six months of hire. Experience Minimum of two years of experience in Intensive Care, Cardiac‑Intensive Care, and/or Emergency Department. License/Certifications Current valid Nebraska Registered Nurse (RN) License, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred at time of hire; required within three months of hire. American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification required. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required. Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) preferred. Certification(s) in area of specialty preferred. Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) preferred. Skills/Knowledge/Abilities Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication and interaction with patients, families, hospital personnel, and co‑workers. Ability to multi‑task and prioritize work assignments. Ability to learn, retain, and utilize computer skills required for the department and hospital information system.
