We are committed to supporting transitioning service members through the DoW SkillBridge program by providing hands-on experience in project coordination and construction leadership, with exposure to real-world operations and the potential for future career opportunities.Position OverviewThe SkillBridge Carpenter is a training-focused, hands-on field role designed to prepare transitioning service members for civilian careers in the construction trades. Under the supervision of experienced Foremen and Working Superintendents, the SkillBridge participant will learn and apply core carpentry and general construction skills while supporting active commercial and renovation projects. This position emphasizes skill development, safety, craftsmanship, and productivity through real-world jobsite experience. Participants will gain exposure to a wide range of construction activities while translating military discipline, teamwork, and operational skills into a civilian construction environment.Training ObjectivesBy the end of the SkillBridge program, the participant will be able to:Demonstrate foundational carpentry and general construction skills in a commercial job site settingSafely use common hand tools, power tools, and construction equipmentUnderstand jobsite workflows, sequencing, and coordination among tradesApply OSHA-aligned safety practices and company quality standardsRead and interpret basic construction drawings and layout informationTranslate military work ethic, teamwork, and accountability into civilian trade competenciesUnder supervision and mentorship, the SkillBridge participant will:Assist with metal stud framing and drywall installationSupport installation of acoustic tile (ACT) ceilingsParticipate in concrete, masonry, and sitework support activitiesPerform interior and exterior carpentry and trim workAssist with demolition and renovation tasksHelp with layout, measuring, and material handlingSupport equipment operation and tool setup under supervisionMaintain productivity while learning proper construction techniquesCoordinate work activities with foremen and other trades on siteIdentify and communicate material needs, site conditions, or discrepanciesParticipate in daily job site setup and cleanup activitiesObserve and apply company quality standards for finished workSafety & Quality Training During the program, participants will:Learn and follow company safety policies and OSHA requirementsParticipate in toolbox talks and jobsite safety meetingsPractice proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work areaDevelop attention to detail and pride in craftsmanshipSkills & Tools Exposure During the program, participants may gain experience with:Hand tools and power tools used in commercial carpentryBasic construction equipment and jobsite materialsConstruction drawings and layout toolsJobsite documentation and communication practicesMentorship & SupervisionSkillBridge participants will be supervised by experienced Mitchell Design Build Foremen and Superintendents in coordination with the SkillBridge Program Director – Livingston Associates.Weekly check-ins to review progress, learning objectives, and skill developmentGradual increase in tasks and responsibilities based on performance and competencyIdeal CandidateTransitioning service members with experience in hands-on, technical, or operational roles such as:Army: Engineers, Construction, Utilities, Maintenance, or Combat Support MOSAir Force: Civil Engineering, Structures, Maintenance, or Operations AFSCNavy/USMC: Seabees, Engineering, Facilities, Maintenance, or Construction-related rates/MOSComfortable performing physical work in indoor and outdoor environmentsStrong work ethic, reliability, and team-oriented mindsetWillingness to learn new skills and take direction in a structured job site environmentFamiliar with safety procedures, accountability, and chain of commandInterested in transitioning into a long-term civilian career in the construction tradesPhysical & Work Environment ExpectationsAbility to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 75 lbsAbility to work at heights and in varying weather conditionsActive construction jobsites with hands-on trade workPost-SkillBridge Employment PathwayParticipants successfully completing the Carpenter SkillBridge program may be evaluated for full-time employment.Anticipated Salary: $52,000 - $60,000 (based on performance and skills obtained)Benefits: health care, 401K, paid time off, and discretionary profit sharingPotential Career Paths:CarpenterLead CarpenterForemanor specialized trade roles
