Director, Learning Technologies

Position Summary As the Director, Learning Technologies, you will lead the delivery and support of USC’s learning management system (LMS) and related learning technologies. You will ensure that these technologies support teaching, learning, and engagement across the university, working closely with faculty, academic leadership, and IT stakeholders to maintain system reliability, guide enhancements, and meet campus needs. You will also oversee vendor relationships and contribute to planning efforts that align learning technologies with institutional priorities. Job Accountabilities Supervise assigned staff, including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, and counseling. Set departmental goals, communicate them, and reassess priorities to achieve objectives. Participate in planning and administration of departmental and project budgets. Consult with users on systems development project requests and communicate project goals and status. Design systems or system configurations to satisfy user needs. Develop project schedules, plans, and resource estimates. Direct staff to adhere to project plans and schedules, ensuring user satisfaction. Make presentations as needed. Evaluate vendor proposals for upgrades and purchases to ensure adherence to specifications. Analyze project feasibility and develop internal operating policies and procedures. Disseminate policies and procedures for users and approve exceptions as authorized. Manage communication among faculty, staff, students, and teams for issue resolution, high‑visibility outages, and incident mitigation. Lead root‑cause analysis and communicate mitigation steps. Engage collaborative relationships with university leaders and IT service leaders. Collaborate on short‑ and long‑term plans, product/service strategies, and support IT governance principles. Assist in governance activities. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience). 7 years of work experience, with at least 5 years in Learning Management Systems leadership, academic technology, or related fields. Direct supervisory and budget management experience. Effective collaboration with academic communities to support technology adoption that improves learning outcomes and student success. Demonstrated experience managing learning management systems and related technologies, delivering effective service and support to students, faculty, and staff. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree. 7+ years of experience in the required areas. Experience leading or managing an LMS such as Brightspace, Canvas, or Blackboard. Background in higher education, academic technology, or educational technology environments. Experience supporting enterprise application platforms used across large, complex organizations. Proven ability to build relationships with faculty, academic leadership, and administrative units. Participation in cross‑functional governance groups or committees. Familiarity with LMS integrations, including student information systems and third‑party tools. Experience managing vendor relationships and external partners to support platform capabilities. Strong communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non‑technical audiences. Experience leading technical and functional teams. Exposure to change management or product management practices for enterprise platforms. Salary and Benefits The annual base salary range for this position is $189,193.65 to $200,000.04.
