DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS : These duties involve responsibility for planning, coordinating and conducting comprehensive in-service education and human resources programs for facility employees, both professional and non-professional personnel, at the Lewis County General Hospital. Duties will also include taking an active role in nurse recruitment activities. Although the position involves coordination of training for all hospital personnel, the primary emphasis is on the in-service training of nursing services personnel. The work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Human Resources, with leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in planning course content and instruction methods. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES :

• Plans, teaches and coordinates formal and informal education programs for faculty employees and evaluates course effectiveness;

• Develops, schedules and evaluates course content for the orientation of new employees to their positions and in planning their functions in the organization;

• Secures, maintains and cares for course instructional materials, supplies and equipment;

• Acts as liaison between nursing service and educational or training programs conducted in other departments, institutions and by other agencies;

• Coordinates and recruits nursing personnel and works directly with nursing management regarding on-going nurse recruitment activities;

• Arranges for trainers and speakers to present information to staff;

• Lectures on subjects relating to in-service education or professional and non-professional nursing service personnel and demonstrates proper modern patient care techniques and procedures;

• Participates in staff meetings and conferences involving coordination of the hospital in-service education program;

• Keeps the Director of Human Resources and other staff personnel informed of meetings and workshops which may be of interest;

• Sets up demonstrations of patient care equipment to acquaint staff with new equipment or further familiarize them with existing equipment;

• Confers with institution staff members on problems relating to nursing service and ancillary patient care functions to aid in establishing course content for a variety of in-service training programs;

• Coordinates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) program and assists with outside community education and training issues;

• Prepares a variety of related records and reports.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS :

Thorough knowledge of modern nursing theory and practices; good knowledge of JCAHO standards, OSHA and NYS Health Department regulations, sanitation and personal hygiene; good knowledge of total quality management techniques; working knowledge of human resources principles and practices; working knowledge of microcomputers; ability to plan, coordinate and conduct in-service nursing and related patient care training programs; ability to arouse and maintain interest in subjects taught; ability to secure the cooperation of others; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; initiative and good judgment in presenting course material and demonstrations; ability to understand and carry out technical, oral or written directions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Either:

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in nursing and two years of experience in professional nursing or in the planning and development of in-service training or education classes; or

B) Graduation from an approved three-year school of nursing and three years of experience in professional nursing or in the planning and development of in-service training or educational classes; or

C) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two year college with an associate's degree in nursing and four years of experience in professional nursing or in the planning and development of in-service training or educational classes; or

D) An equivalent combination of experience and training as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT : Possession of a current valid New York State license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
