Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA)

As a CNA, you will support the school nursing staff by providing health care to students. Your duties will include collecting and recording students' medical findings, maintaining medical records, and reporting any noteworthy observations to a supervising school district nurse. Additionally, under the supervision of your school district clinical team, you will perform specialized procedures and health care services for students with medical needs. You will also support students with their activities of daily living and classwork, as well as provide first aid and emergency care. Your students will vary in age ranging from 3 to 22 years old, depending on the school you are assigned to.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Dispenses medication and maintains medical logs according to physician instructions and school policy, under the direction of the school district nurse
• Provides first aid and emergency care to ill or injured students
• Performs specialized physical health care services and procedures for students with medical needs
• Performs toileting and diapering assistance to students while in full compliance with internal policies
• Assists students with classwork and activities of daily living
• Follows students' medical orders, health care plans, individualized education programs, and other legally binding documents related to students
• Confers with students, parents, and staff regarding student health and student needs
• Determines urgent and emergent scenarios requiring escalation to supervising school district nurse and/or 911
• Acts as a mandated reporter, reporting signs and symptoms of child abuse or neglect
• Acts as a first responder to anyone on school grounds in an emergency
• Creates and maintains health office records, reports, documents, files, and supplies
• Takes appropriate action to ensure compliance with state law and district policy and procedure
• Acts as a clerk and receptionist as needed, answering telephones and inputting data

Requirements:

• Basic math proficiency including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, sufficient to accurately perform medication calculations, diabetic care tasks (such as carbohydrate counting and blood glucose-related calculations), and other routine nursing responsibilities
• The ability to lift, carry, push, and or pull up to 50 pounds unassisted and over 50 pounds with assistance
• The ability to provide life-saving interventions if needed (this includes the ability to perform at least 5 sets of hands only CPR for roughly 2 minutes)
• The ability to assume and maintain a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, crawling, sitting, standing) for extended periods of time
• The ability to sit on the floor, stand, or walk for extended periods of time and includes the physical demands of assisting a student or students in and outside of a classroom space
• Must be able to operate and navigate a variety of specialized health care equipment and computer interfaces
• Must have reliable transportation and be willing and able to travel between different job sites as needed
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English across verbal, written, and digital formats
• Must be able to exchange information in loud and fast-paced environments

Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent
• Graduation from a CDPH-accredited Certified Nurse Assistant training program
• Experience: Previous CNA experience preferred
• Licensure and Certifications: Current and unrestricted CNA certificate within state of practice
• BLS certification through the American Heart Association
