SOCIAL WORKER III / FOSTER CARE / ADOPTION / LICENSURE General Definition of Work The primary purpose of this position in the Children’s Services Unit is to recruit, train, license, and relicense foster homes, to serve as a placement specialist for the Children’s Services Unit and to facilitate adoptions. The primary purpose of the unit is to provide intensive services to children and their families in which abuse and/or neglect has been substantiated ultimately striving for permanence. Essential Functions / Typical Tasks The Social Worker receives intake calls on abuse or neglect situations, investigating situations involving abuse and neglect, writing court summaries, and completing home studies. The social worker in this position is responsible for these and any other duties or responsibilities assigned by their supervisor or by the director. The worker spends approximately 50% of their time in the office. Paperwork including the completion of forms, case studies, home studies, documentation for treatment services, investigative summary forms, letter to reporters, parents, court reports, etc. is completed in this office. Also, other responsibilities in the office are the arrangements of services such as mental health counseling, medical examinations, etc. Great accuracy is required. If the worker is not accurate and complete in making thorough investigations, a child could be separated from their family unnecessarily or a child could remain in danger. Intense mental concentration as well as visual accuracy and awareness is always required to ensure all facts are gathered and recorded and correct decisions are made based on these facts. The worker uses a car, calculator, copier, computer, fax machine, scanner, and telephone frequently. Work hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Occasionally the worker may need to work past 5:00 pm to resolve a problem before leaving for the day. The worker will be required to do emergency beeper duty approximately every 6 to 8 weeks, 24 hours a day, for an entire 7‑day week. Holiday coverage is also required. Worker may also be called to man emergency shelter during disasters. Conferring with law enforcement, legal, medical, mental health, judicial personnel toward the alleviation of child abuse, neglect and dependency are responsibilities of this position. Consultation with hospitals, schools, and agencies is necessary in providing for in‑home services. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The worker will need the ability to speak and write clearly, convey information to others and respond appropriately in emotional or crisis situations. Organizational skills are essential to meet designated responsibilities and to function under stress. Education and Experience Master’s degree from an accredited school of Social Work and one year of Social Work or counseling experience; or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of Social Work and two years of Social Work or counseling experience; or a Master’s degree in a counseling field and two years of Social Work or counseling; or a four‑year degree in a human services field or related curriculum including at least 15 semester hours in courses related to Social Work or counseling and three years of Social Work or counseling experience; or graduation from a four‑year college or university and four years of experience in Rehabilitation counseling, Pastoral counseling, or a related human services field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work, or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Physical Requirements This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, and lifting. Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina. Annual Salary
