Financial Counselor - MUSCP

Job Description Summary Responsible for evaluating scheduled patient visits to identify and resolve funding and coverage issues. Assist patients applying for Medicaid, disability, financial assistance, insurance coverage, or other resources to pay out‑of‑pocket for MUHA & UMA services. Provide patients with co‑payment, deductible, and deposit information prior to service rendering. Responsibilities Act as an integral member of the health‑care team, reflecting a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. Notify patients of co‑payments, deductibles, and deposits before services and collect when applicable. Provide estimates using the fee estimation tool in Epic; assist in processing financial applications. Minimize patient complaints through effective communication and education regarding hospital and physician out‑of‑pocket costs. Proactively identify discrepancies within Epic and work with appropriate teams to resolve them. Accept payments made in advance of service and forward them to the billing office for posting to the patient account. For patients with insurance, calculate patient estimates based on plan benefits and out‑of‑pocket thresholds; discuss and finalize payment methods; ensure all activities are documented in Epic. Obtain and record accurate patient data; ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including informing patients about programs (FAP, Cobra). Collaborate with internal and external peers, communicating at a professional level. Interact with state workers and external partners to accomplish work efforts; ensure patient accounts are appropriately processed for financial counseling and visible to the health‑care team. Handle accounts assigned to patient queues in Epic, meeting departmental metrics. Comply with all MUSC Health Policies and Procedures. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Training, Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent. 0–6 months of related work experience. Knowledge of medical terminology and health insurance preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with Epic preferred. Punctual, dependable, with excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills and proactive initiative. Capability to work independently with minimal supervision. Licensure, Certifications, Registrations N/A Physical Requirements Continuous requirement to perform job functions while standing, walking, and sitting. Must bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders, and have good finger dexterity. Maintain 20/40 corrected vision. Work in a latex‑safe environment indoors. Frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing 20 lbs unassisted; lift from 36" to overhead 15 lbs.
