Assistant United States Attorney (Criminal Division)

Summary The mission of the Department of Justice is to uphold the rule of law, keep our country safe, and protect civil rights. You will be part of a dedicated team helping to enforce federal criminal and civil laws that protect life, liberty, and property. Duties & Responsibilities Assistant U.S. Attorneys prosecute criminal cases and litigate civil cases in the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. Responsibilities increase and assignments become more complex as training and experience progress. Handle a wide variety of complex cases, including drug trafficking, money-laundering, terrorism-related offenses, firearms and other violent crime offenses, cybercrime, environmental crimes, and a variety of fraud and white‑collar offenses. Work in one of the four offices located in Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk, and Newport News. Requirements Must be a United States Citizen or National. Initial appointment conditioned upon satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing). Continued employment subject to a favorable background investigation. Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable. Applicants must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar in any U.S. jurisdiction by the entry‑on‑duty date. Law school graduates and current law students taking a July 2026 bar examination may be considered. Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Qualifications Preferred: Experience litigating criminal cases in federal courts and/or a federal judicial clerkship. Equivalent experience litigating in state courts as a prosecutor will also be considered. Education Applicants must possess a J.D. degree. Salary Assistant United States Attorney’s pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The basic pay range is $65,563 to $171,487, which will include the following locality pay based on the location selection.
