Position Overview
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a strategic executive responsible for the overall financial health, stability, and long-term sustainability of the credit union. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CFO provides financial leadership by directing accounting, finance, budgeting, asset/liability management (ALM), treasury investments, financial planning and analysis, regulatory reporting, and financial risk management.
The CFO serves as a trusted advisor to the CEO, Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee, Asset Liability Committee (ALCO), and executive leadership by providing sound financial analysis, strategic recommendations, and insights that support informed decision-making and organizational growth.
The CFO ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) requirements while promoting operational excellence, fiscal responsibility, and the credit union’s Mission.
Major Responsibilities
- Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors on financial performance, capital strategy, liquidity, and long-term financial planning.
- Participate in establishing organizational strategy and long-term business objectives; develop financial models to evaluate strategic initiatives, analyze profitability by product, branch, business line, provide executive dashboard and key performance indicators.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to evaluate new products, services, mergers, branch expansion, and strategic initiatives.
- Lead credit union decision making by providing financial analysis and business insight; use predictive analytics to improve financial performance.
- Model and promote the credit union’s Mission, Vision, Values, and leadership competencies.
- Oversee all accounting, financial reporting, regulatory reporting, financial audits, and internal controls to ensure accuracy, integrity, and timeliness.
- Lead Asset Liability Management (ALM), liquidity management, interest rate risk modeling, and capital planning.
- Direct the annual budgeting process and rolling forecasts, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities.
- Present financial reports, forecasts, and recommendations to the Board of Directors and Board Committees.
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Develop and monitor the annual operation and capital budgets.
- Monitor profitability, efficiency ratios, net worth, capital adequacy, and other financial indicators.
- Ensure compliance with NCUA regulations, state regulatory requirements, and other applicable financial laws.
- Lead and coordinate annual financial external and internal audit activity.
- Maintain strong relationships with regulators, external auditors, and financial partners.
- Promote automation and continuous improvement within financial operations.
- Ensure financial systems and reporting tools effectively support business needs.
- Promote professional development and succession planning.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field required.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years in an executive or senior leadership role.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) preferred
- Demonstrated expertise in ALM, capital planning, liquidity management, regulatory financial planning, GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Thorough understanding of NCUA regulations and credit union financial operations.
- Advanced financial modeling, forecasting, and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills - ability to translate complex financial information into actionable business insights.
- In-depth knowledge of credit union products and services, as well as competitor and potential products and services.
- Strong project management skills to include multi-departmental initiatives that may require significant resource investment in learning new data analytics techniques and procedures.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and sound judgment.
- Proficiency computer skills, including financial systems
- Advanced Microsoft Excel knowledge required
- Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Frequently required to walk and stand. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
