Job Title and Location Accountant 2 Job Location: FISCAL OPERATIONS 800 W. Washington St., Phoenix, AZ 85007 Posting Details Salary: $60,726.00 - $70,726.00 Anticipated Salary: $65,726.00 Grade: 20 Closing Date: 06/01/2026 Job Summary Performs payroll and travel functions, including processing and reviewing payroll transactions, verifying timesheets, and auditing records, running reports and processing employee & travel reimbursements in compliance with State of Arizona policies. Process and resolve payroll, travel & employee reimbursements, workers compensation and separation of employment. Identifies and corrects discrepancies and payroll project errors; and supports system troubleshooting within AZ360 to ensure accurate and timely processing. Provides backup payroll support and may travel as required. Remain current on changing processes to the travel software and travel policies. Apply subject matter expertise in Travel policies, State of Arizona issued Travel Cards and performing travel audits. This position may be available for remote work within Arizona (Two (2) days per week in the office/hoteling). Job Duties Applies technical accounting principles to process, review, and analyze payroll transactions, including overpayments, deductions, and adjustments within AZ360 and assist customers. As subject matter expert, process and audit travel and employee reimbursement requests for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with state policies and assist customers. Analyzes documents and transactions to determine causes of payroll, travel, workers comp and separation related errors and provide resolutions. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA). Payroll Policies and Statutes. Above average Travel Policies and Statutes. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Automated Accounting System. Financial Reporting. Microsoft (Excel, Word) and Google Workspace applications and general databases. Skills Analytical - To interpret financial data and correct errors. Data entry - to record transactions in accounting system. Strong research techniques. Oral and Written Communication Skills - to effectively communicate with other units/departments. Effective communication with internal and external customers. Accurately record data in accounting, payroll, and travel systems. Interpret State and Federal Statutes and Policies. Abilities To work well with others. To professionally communicate with others. To understand and anticipate constituent and stakeholder concerns. Strong organizational and time management. Complete tasks in a timely manner. Organization and time management to make sure job responsibilities are completed in a timely manner. Handle unexpected workloads effectively. Ensure data transactions entered in the Accounting, AZ360, and Travel software comply with applicable State and Federal Statutes, Policies and Rules. Well versed in the Travel Reimbursement process to comply with state travel policy. Selective Preference(s) Experience in payroll, travel reimbursements, travel cards, and audit. Pre-Employment Requirements This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
