PEOPLE FIRST – Conduct fair, accurate, secure, and transparent elections to increase public participation and confidence. The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division seeks full-time, seasonal Election Worker – Office Assistants to support the upcoming 2 June 2026 Statewide Direct Primary Election. This position supports efficient operations in a fast‑paced election environment.

BALLOT RETRIEVAL

Requirements: Valid CA driver’s license and ability to drive County vehicles (cargo van/SUV/car) to multiple San Mateo County locations, accompanied by a partner during the day (and evenings as necessary). Attention to detail. Ability to perform ballot retrievals per detailed procedures. Capability to lift 50 lbs. Duties: Retrieve voted ballots from Vote Centers and Ballot Drop Boxes throughout San Mateo County. Deliver retrieved ballots to the San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division. Deliver supplies to Vote Centers. Assist with Vote by Mail processing.

VOTE BY MAIL

Requirements: Capability to lift 25 lbs. Great attention to detail. Duties: Retrieve ballots from local post office. Drive a County van. Process Vote by Mail ballots. Perform repetitive work. Operate ballot processing equipment. Scan and adjudicate ballots.

VOTE REGISTRATION / CLERICAL SUPPORT

Requirements: Great attention to detail. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Consistently follow complex written procedures. Duties: Data entry and database maintenance. Update voter registration records from statewide databases and other agencies. Prepare, verify, and process provisional ballots, including challenged ballots. Prepare, verify, and process petitions (nominations, initiatives, recall petitions) and perform second‑level petition verifications.

VOTER HELP DESK SUPPORT

Requirements: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Great attention to detail. Consistently follow complex written procedures. Duties: Assist election staff at Vote Centers over the phone. Answer questions about procedures. Provide limited technical support based on pre‑established procedures and guidelines. Data entry.

SUPPLIES

Requirements: Capability to lift 25 lbs. Follow detailed written procedures. Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Duties: Inventory and pack/unpack Vote Center supplies. Fulfill inventory/supply lists for multiple Vote Centers. Record and update inventory numbers regularly. Operate pallet jacks and other devices to relocate supplies safely. Accept shipments and packages at the warehouse.

FIELD TECHS / WAREHOUSE

Requirements: Valid CA driver’s license and ability to drive County or personal vehicles to Vote Centers. Capability to lift 25+ lbs. Duties: Test and verify functionality of electronic voting equipment before, during, and after voting periods. Assist in preparing and staging heavy equipment and supplies for delivery to Vote Centers. Inventory and organize voting equipment and Vote Center supplies. Assist in delivery, connection, testing, and pickup of voting equipment at Vote Centers, and deliver spare equipment and supplies. Provide on‑site troubleshooting and technical support for voting equipment. Compensation & Schedule: Office Assistant I (Extra Help) starting hourly wage $24.91. Overtime expected for most positions; extra‑help hours are at‑will and may vary weekly. Extra‑help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours per fiscal year. Some positions eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Employees not guaranteed permanent status at assignment end. Qualifications: Minimum one year of general clerical, office assistant, phone services, or computer experience for Voter Registration/Clerical Support candidates. Critical skills for all positions include ability to prioritize work, coordinate multiple activities, organize and maintain accurate files and records, and understand oral and written directions. Office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Most positions require overtime, long hours, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
