Paralegal Position

Internal Applicants Only This position is open only to current employees of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Applicants must serve and pass their six-month probation period in their current position in order to be eligible to apply.

Salary: Range 51 - $39.81 (step one) - $50.47 (step ten) *

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, our core business hours are 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Work Location: In-person/telecommute (hybrid) - King County Courthouse

This paralegal position provides support for a trial intense workload with a dedicated team that handles sex, trafficking, and felony child abuse cases.

Job Duties

• The paralegal will assist prosecutors in all phases of trial preparation; prepare, process and e-file legal documents; generate, process, print and send witness letters and subpoenas for service.
• Maintain PbK to reflect updated witness information, court dates, and trial and disposition information.
• Manage daily work requests within "MyView" in PbK; scan, prepare, Bates stamp and disseminate discovery, including pro se discovery where specific electronic guidelines are followed.
• Redact video and audio in programs such as Windows Movie Maker, evidence.com and Audacity.
• Redact discovery with Adobe Pro.
• Request jail calls, upload calls in Jail Call Database and review calls as needed; create exhibits, set-up equipment for trial.
• Attend witness interviews and take notes as needed; request interpreters or translation services as needed.
• Maintain overview of the status of each assigned deputy prosecutor's caseload; assist detectives/prosecutors with processing search warrants per KCPAO Criminal Division policy.
• Communicate and serve as a liaison with deputy prosecutors, law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, defense investigators, court personnel, witnesses, victims and other agencies; coordinate witness interviews and testimony.
• Arrange travel and housing arrangements; review and interpret legal documents and explain legal procedures to victims, witnesses and the public
• Assist unit supervisor and staff supervisor with special projects; and perform related work as required.
• Active participation in PAO equity work, attending equity trainings and discussions.

The successful candidate will perform a variety of tasks that require the exercise of initiative and independent judgment and the ability to anticipate needs and appropriately respond.

• Candidates must possess excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with and respond in a positive, experienced and helpful manner with diverse individuals, including victims, witnesses, complainants, deputy prosecutors, law enforcement officers, judges, court personnel, defense attorneys, defense investigators and other agencies.
• Skills in responding in a positive, mature and helpful manner with numerous individuals including victims and witnesses who may be in various emotional states and reluctant to assist with prosecution.
• Analytical and critical thinking skills to make decisions and initiate action.
• Proven time management skills to effectively and accurately handle multiple tasks within short deadlines; and the ability to handle routine emergency situations under pressure and to assume unscheduled and unexpected responsibilities.
• They must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion involving sensitive matters.
• They must also possess skill in using computers and a variety of software such as PbK, Word, Adobe Pro, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Familiarity with JABS, JBRS, SAWS, KC Script, People Map/Accurint and other criminal justice programs a plus.
• A successful candidate will possess a desire to learn a wide variety of new skills and be able to adapt to, and work comfortably in, a fast-paced work environment and have knowledge of legal office practices and procedures, particularly in the Criminal Division.

Application Process:

PAO employees who are represented by Teamsters Local No. 117 will receive priority consideration. There exists a broken rung in many organizations that can make attaining formal positions challenging to historically excluded groups. Selection Process

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, qualified bargaining unit members will be invited to participate in a panel interview process.

*Employees with less than 2 years of service will receive.25 per hour less than the hourly salary table due to a mandatory contribution toward the Teamsters Pension Trust that was voted by members of Teamsters Local No. 117.
