Field Engineer

The Field Engineer performs field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel, and rebar across project sites in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and surrounding areas. This role involves traveling to job sites, collecting and transporting samples to the laboratory, documenting findings in written and digital reports, and supporting project managers and technicians to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with project requirements.

Responsibilities

• Perform field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel, and rebar.
• Collect samples from job sites such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and rebar and ensure accurate identification and documentation.
• Transport material samples with associated identifying documentation to the laboratory for further testing and analysis.
• Conduct inspections on reinforced concrete, structural masonry, spray-applied fireproofing, roofing, and other structural elements as needed.
• Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observations in the form of written and digital reports for daily transmittal to the project manager.
• Provide clear documentation of findings and results and discuss the accuracy of data with the project manager prior to submittal.
• Communicate effectively with project managers, engineering technicians, client representatives, contractor representatives, and other stakeholders regarding construction site conditions, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection results.
• Adhere to strict safety standards and follow all safety rules and practices on every project.
• Perform pre-task planning prior to executing work to ensure safe and efficient operations.
• Report any safety issues or concerns to management promptly.
• Maintain and clean assigned equipment, vehicles, and work areas to ensure they remain in good working condition.
• Assist with scheduling and dispatch of technicians to project sites when needed.
• Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects and ensuring that testing and documentation meet established requirements.
• Work under close supervision of higher-level technicians or staff professionals while performing basic testing and observation duties, progressing into increased levels of training and responsibility over time.
• Check in with the project manager before each shift ends to provide a status update on work performed and any issues encountered.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or geology.
• Ability to travel regularly to project sites in Berwick, Pennsylvania; South Jersey; the Philadelphia area; central Pennsylvania including State College; and New York.
• Experience or coursework related to soil sampling and geotechnical testing.
• Ability to perform concrete testing, including sampling and inspection of reinforced concrete.
• Familiarity with construction materials such as aggregates, asphalt, steel, and structural masonry.
• Capability to use and understand nuclear density gauges and other field testing equipment (training provided as needed).
• Strong observational skills to accurately assess field conditions and construction materials.
• Ability to prepare, tabulate, and submit clear written and digital reports on test results and site observations.
• Effective communication skills for interacting with project managers, technicians, clients, and contractors.
• Commitment to strict safety standards and willingness to follow all safety rules and practices.
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills for managing samples, documentation, and equipment.
• Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining regular communication with the project manager.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience or education in environmental science, construction management, engineering, or geotechnical disciplines.
• Laboratory experience with construction materials testing is beneficial.
• Interest in growing within the architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) industry and taking on progressively increased responsibilities.
• Willingness to participate in ongoing company-paid training, including safety and industry certifications.
• Ability to assist with scheduling and dispatch of technicians to project sites when required.
• Six-month contract-to-hire arrangement with potential for permanent employment based on performance and learning progression.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Moorestown, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
