PARISH FINANCIAL COMPLIANCE & SUPPORT MANAGER

Full Time/Exempt August 2026

POSITION SUMMARY

The Parish Financial Compliance & Support Manager serves as a resource to the parishes and schools of the Diocese of Monterey by promoting sound financial management, accountability, and compliance with diocesan policies and procedures. This position conducts periodic on-site reviews of parish financial operations, evaluates internal controls, identifies opportunities for improvement, and works collaboratively with pastors, parish administrators, and bookkeepers to strengthen financial practices. This position is intended to be educational and consultative while ensuring that all parishes maintain appropriate financial controls and stewardship of Church resources. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Representative of the Diocese Diocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church and are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work. Financial Compliance

• Conduct scheduled and unscheduled compliance reviews of parish and school financial operations.
• Ensure compliance with all diocesan financial policies, procedures, and internal control standards.
• Verify that financial records are accurate, complete, and properly maintained.
• Review accounting practices to ensure conformity with accepted accounting principles and diocesan requirements.

Bookkeeping & Accounting

• Review bookkeeping procedures and provide guidance on proper accounting practices.
• Evaluate QuickBooks setup and usage to ensure consistency with diocesan standards.
• Review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports for accuracy.
• Assist parishes in correcting accounting errors and implementing best practices.

Cash Handling & Banking

• Evaluate cash collection and money-counting procedures.
• Ensure proper segregation of duties during collections and deposits.
• Verify that bank deposits are timely and properly documented.
• Review bank reconciliations for completeness and accuracy.

Internal Controls

• Review check-signing authority and approval processes.
• Verify that expenditures are properly approved before payment.
• Ensure receipts and supporting documentation exist for all purchases and reimbursements.
• Review credit card usage for compliance with diocesan policy.
• Evaluate purchasing procedures and vendor payment practices.
• Review the safeguarding of cash, investments, and other parish assets.

Expense & Budget Review

• Analyze operating expenses for reasonableness and identify unusual spending patterns.
• Recommend cost-saving opportunities without compromising ministry.
• Review vendor contracts and recurring expenses for potential savings.
• Assist parishes in improving financial efficiency and stewardship.

Reporting

• Prepare written reports summarizing findings, recommendations, and corrective actions.
• Assign priority levels to compliance issues.
• Follow up on previously identified deficiencies to ensure corrective action has been completed.
• Provide reports to the Chief Financial Officer and other diocesan leadership as appropriate.

Education & Training

• Provide training and coaching to parish bookkeepers and administrators.
• Assist with the implementation of new diocesan financial policies.
• Develop educational materials and best-practice guides.
• Serve as a financial resource to pastors and parish staff.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field preferred.
• Five or more years of accounting, auditing, or financial management experience.
• Experience with nonprofit, church, or fund accounting preferred.
• Strong knowledge of internal controls and accounting principles.
• Experience with QuickBooks; MIP Fund Accounting experience is highly desirable.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

• Frequent travel throughout the Diocese of Monterey, including Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Cruz counties.
• Valid California driver's license and reliable transportation required.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining regular communication with the Finance Office.

HONOR AND MAINTAIN A STRICT LEVEL OF CONFIDENTIALITY

SALARY

$90,000-$100,000 annually.
