Building Inspector III (Plan Review)

Job Overview The City of Sacramento's Community Development Department is hiring a Building Inspector (Plan Reviewer) to work in the Plan Review Section of the Building Division. Responsibilities Perform rule‑specific inspection activities, including reviewing plans and inspecting new building projects, alterations, and repairs. Enforce a variety of codes, ordinances, and established standards to achieve compliance. Prepare and maintain reports, identify and enforce code violations, and issue permits as required. Work with diagrams, specifications, and work product in the field and office, enter data into the Automated Permit System and manage digital records. Interact with architects, engineers, contractors, builders, homeowners, tenants and the public, explaining and interpreting requirements and restrictions. Conduct inspections of building work product, materials, and construction methods, including substandard or dangerous works. Maintain effective working relationships with staff, engineers, architects, contractors, tenants, owners, and the general public. Operate a personal computer and other electronic equipment, including field entry devices. Lift, carry, push and operate tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and perform work in all weather conditions. Assignments The inspector may be assigned to one or more of the following specialty inspection or review disciplines: Building Specialty Inspection Plumbing / Mechanical Specialty Inspection Electrical Specialty Inspection Roofing Combination Inspection Residential Combination Inspection Multi‑Family Residential and Light Commercial Combination Inspection Residential Combination & Structural Plan Review Non‑Structural Building Plan Review Plumbing / Mechanical Plan Review Electrical Plan Review Project Management Enforcement Case Management Qualifications Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade or completion of 21 units of college‑level courses in building inspection, construction, or related areas. Experience: One year of experience performing building inspection work within one or more inspection disciplines for a municipal or county government agency, or three years of journey‑level experience in the building construction field as a plumber, electrician, carpenter, roofer, or related field. Certification: Possession of either a Building Inspector or Plans Examiner certification by the I.C.C. or other approved certifying organization. Certification in the specific work discipline(s) must be obtained within one year of appointment and maintained. Abilities: Ability to read and interpret building plans and specifications, identify code violations, write reports, operate a motor vehicle, use a personal computer, lift up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces and all weather conditions, and provide customer service to the public. Special Qualifications Valid California Class C driver license required at the time of appointment.
