About the Position

Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 26-week contract through holidays Shift: Day/Night Rotation Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years in an emergency department License: Current Registered Nurse Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification (AHA or RQI only) Must-Have: Two years of acute hospital experience in emergency nursing Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care, applies appropriate interventions, and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations. The ED RN utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain/discomfort and safety. He/she assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate. The nurse connects with patients and families during triage. He/she identifies the initial management of patients of all age groups and assigns priority of care in accordance with Triage Standards. The RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. He/she conveys and gathers information concisely and accurately. The ED RN conducts primary assessment of critical needs, detects and documents any major deviations from the norm for all age groups within acceptable time frames, and correctly identifies necessary steps/interventions required. The nurse uses direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data to conduct a secondary assessment. He/she identifies contributing factors, health history, events, or activities preceding the emergent health event. The RN assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual and documents and reports any suspicion of abuse in all age groups. He/she reassesses the patient to identify responses to treatment and/or changes in condition and responds appropriately. The ED RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. He/she teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The nurse understands the personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. The RN prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments. He/she makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. The nurse teaches patients what is needed to continue care/healing at home. He/she assesses patient/family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize understanding. He/she asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instruction. The ED RN seeks to understand what is most important to the patient/family, acknowledging that they are the central focus of all care and services. He/she embraces the importance of creating a Healing Environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. The nurse keeps patients and significant others informed of the process of care and anticipates needs. He/she maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout the emergency department visit. The ED RN updates patient communication boards throughout the stay.
