Instructor, Chemistry - Adjunct

Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College support student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. Responsibilities Teaching Prepare and teach departmental chemistry courses designed for college transfer programs, covering a wide variety of topics throughout the curriculum in a laboratory environment. Faculty may teach day, evening and/or weekend hours. Develop learner-centered lesson plans. Employ teaching strategies and instructional materials for different learning styles. Incorporate current technology into classroom, distance learning and laboratory environments where pedagogically appropriate. Create and model a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population. Prepare, distribute and use instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media and other devices as appropriate. Conduct appropriate assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs/general education. Professional Development Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission: Participate in professional development activities to maintain currency in the field; maintain current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation. Participate in opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies. Administration Provide daily and ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment and student records: Maintain classroom and laboratory spaces, including upkeep of assigned equipment. Provide for the security of facilities, equipment and instructional materials and maintain safe working conditions. Maintain student records (grades, attendance) in accordance with established deadlines using technology-based programs (Colleague, Self-Service, Canvas). Comply with all applicable college, state and federal rules and regulations. Student Support Provide an environment conducive to student success: Address student concerns in a timely manner. Promote retention and persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success. Refer students to campus and community resources when appropriate. Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork. Additional Duties and Responsibilities Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor. Qualifications Education Required A master’s degree in Chemistry or a related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in chemistry from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution. Education Preferred Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution. Experience Required Successful experience teaching Chemistry or related subjects in a community college or university setting. Experience Preferred Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes. Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems. KSA Required Multi-task. Respect diversity. Adapt to changing procedures, protocols or assignments. Create and maintain a learner-centered environment. Communicate effectively. Effectively implement and apply technology solutions. KSA Preferred None specified. Department/Job Specific Requirements Mandatory GTCC trainings upon initial hire and annual updates as required; other required trainings may be added as needed: Reporting Requirements. Physical Demands May include teaching day, evening and/or weekend hours. Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor. Maintain student records.
