Staff Accountant II

The Accountant II performs professional accounting work supporting the organizations fiscal operations and grant-funded programs. Responsibilities include general accounting, accounts payable and receivable support, financial reporting, budget monitoring, compliance activities, and audit support. The position works closely with program and administrative staff to maintain accurate financial records, support fiscal operations, and ensure compliance with funding requirements. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Senior Grant Accountant, with opportunities to develop expertise in nonprofit, governmental, and grant accounting. Examples of Work Performed (This list should not be interpreted as all-inclusive. Prepare routine and recurring journal entries, maintain supporting documentation, and assist with month-end and year-end closing processes. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations, research and resolve discrepancies, and support related financial reporting activities. Assist in monitoring grant and departmental budgets, spending plans, and expenditures; identify variances, compliance concerns, and other issues for review. Prepare accurate grant billings and invoices for review/approval, ensuring reconciliations and adjusting journal entries are completed in advance. Review invoices for accuracy, completeness, and proper accounting and grant coding, and assist with payment processing. Support accounts receivable activities, including invoicing, tracking, collections, and reconciliations. Maintain grant reconciliations, expenditure tracking, and supporting documentation. Maintain organized electronic files of contracts, budgets, invoices, and audit support documentation. Support internal and external audits by providing timely, accurate documentation and responding to information requests. Collaborate with program staff and management to support fiscal operations, reporting needs, budget updates and overall grant status. Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local grant requirements, proactively identifying risks or issues. Contribute to process improvement efforts that strengthen accounting operations, compliance, internal controls, and efficiency. Provide back-up support within the Fiscal Department as needed and perform other related duties as assigned. Experience and Education Bachelors degree in accounting, Finance, or related field preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Two (2) to (4) years of progressively responsible accounting experience required. Experience with grant, fund, nonprofit, or governmental accounting preferred. Experience with general ledger accounting, month-end closing and year-end close processes, financial reporting, journal entries, account reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable functions, and audit preparation, strongly preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Knowledge of governmental and nonprofit accounting principles and practices, preferred. Familiarity with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) compliance is a plus. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, lookups, and data analysis, strongly preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, and Adobe Acrobat. Experience with fund accounting software (i.e., MIP Fund Accounting), preferred. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to explain financial information to non-financial staff. Ability to analyze financial data, identify discrepancies, and recommend corrective actions. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while independently managing workload and deadlines. Registration, Certification, or Licensure Must possess a valid driver's license and have access to reliable transportation. Local travel required; in-state and out-of-state travel optional and project-based. Must be legally eligible for employment in the United States.
