Physician - General Surgeon

About the Role The Surgeon acts as a surgical consultant for providers and patients throughout the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC). The role requires high-level skill and decision making in general surgery, including determining which patients require surgery, the timing and types of operations to perform, and providing preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative care. The Surgeon may serve in a leadership role as Chief of Service as assigned and is responsible for the care of patients covered by the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act. Key Responsibilities Provide comprehensive general surgery services to inpatients and outpatients at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital. Conduct evaluations, clinical analysis, and recommendations regarding complex and diverse therapeutic methods. Act as a surgical consultant for village health care providers and physicians throughout Southeast Alaska, including field visits to remote villages and the Ethel Lund Medical Center in Juneau. Provide general surgical coverage for Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital’s emergency department. Serve in leadership positions as requested by the medical director. Participate in all medical staff functions, including quality assurance reviews, medical staff meetings, and peer review. Abide by medical staff bylaws, rules, regulations, and clinical services policies and procedures. Perform on‑call duties, with coverage expectations of one in two shifts in cooperation with the medical director and administration. Maintain patient‑facing clinical hours proportionate to the assigned FTE, with a minimum of 36 patient‑facing hours per week for a 1.0 FTE appointment; other hours may be allocated to administrative duties, meetings, training, and non‑face‑to‑face patient care activities. Perform other duties as assigned. Education & Certifications M.D. or D.O. degree. Completion of an accredited general surgery residency. Licensure by the Alaska State Medical Board. Board certification or eligibility by the American Board of Surgery. BLS, ACLS, PALS, and ATLS certification. Experience Three (3) or more years of experience in general surgery is desired, but not required. Skills & Knowledge Extensive knowledge of general surgical practice and procedures. Knowledge of allopathic medical theories and therapies. Detailed knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Proficiency in surgical skills across the entire range of general surgery practice, including endoscopy and colonoscopy. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Advanced airway and trauma care capabilities. Ability to work independently with critically ill patients. Coordination of care through the entire operating room team.
