WEIGHTS AND MEASURES INSPECTOR 2

Overview The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA), Division of Measurement Standards, is seeking to fill one vacant Weights and Measures Inspector 2 position in Las Vegas. This position’s duties include checking the net content of package goods, verifying prices, regulating methods of advertising and sale of commodities, and responding to all documented complaints regarding applicable devices and advertised pricing. The role is performed almost entirely in the field and requires extensive travel throughout the assigned territory, including overnight stays up to 25% of the time. Travel may include five business days for training outside of Nevada and a 4‑day, 10‑hour shift schedule is possible. Because of the CDL requirement, federal law requires random screening of controlled substances throughout the course of employment. Responsibilities Inspect all commercial weighing and measuring devices. Enforce applicable regulations and sample gasoline and diesel fuel for quality. Test gasoline dispensers, linear measuring devices, petroleum gas measuring devices, small and large capacity scales, and large capacity meters. Check equipment for wear, malfunctioning, or other problems and verify accuracy with appropriate weights and meters. Record information on report form, calculate allowable tolerance, determine compliance, and remove non‑compliant devices from service. Perform petroleum inspections, visually check advertising and labeling, obtain samples for laboratory analysis, and verify brand registration. Investigate violations and consumer complaints, record data, conduct consumer interviews, evaluate information, prepare reports, recommend corrective actions, and preserve evidence. Maintain testing equipment and standards, perform preventive and minor maintenance, and verify calibration against official State standards. Audit public weighmasters, review certificates of weights, verify transactions, and test weighing devices. Verify prices in retail establishments to ensure that commodity prices reflect the point‑of‑sale system price. Prepare and maintain files, records, and reports, file inspection documents, record information, document consumer complaints, submit work activity reports, list businesses with weighing and measuring devices, remove obsolete files, and develop an annual inspection schedule. Perform related duties as assigned and provide field training to newly hired personnel as needed. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in science, mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, agriculture, or a closely related field plus one year of experience in inspection, maintenance or installation of mechanical or electrical equipment involving weighing and measuring devices; OR Associate’s degree plus two years of experience as described above; OR High school diploma or equivalent education plus three years of applicable work experience, of which one year was as described above; OR One year of experience as a Weights and Measures Inspector I in Nevada State service; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Detailed knowledge of weighing and measuring devices; businesses that use weighing and measuring devices. Working knowledge of NIST Handbook 44 and 133. Abilities include using technical test equipment, reading and interpreting technical manuals and handbooks, developing procedures, communicating with regulated industries and government agencies, performing measurement operations, converting between metric and customary units, supervising personnel, utilizing resources effectively, and mediating between parties.
