26-27 Ay Teaching Associate (Ta) - Chemistry & Biochemistry (Fresno)

Position Overview The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks graduate students to serve as Teaching Associates for general education lab courses, primarily CHEM 1A lab and CHEM 3A lab. Eligibility is based on successful TA eligibility, department criteria, and adequate funding. The department may assign TAs to additional beginner courses in the department. The department reserves the right to select the most qualified candidate for each position and to assign TAs to courses appropriate to the program and curriculum. Courses offered may vary by semester; no guarantee of employment from semester to semester can be made. Appointment Dates and Hours Anticipated appointment dates are: Fall: August 19 – December 22; Spring: January 15 – May 26 Students can work up to 20 hours per week. 1 unit is equivalent to 2.66 hours per week (40 hours ÷ 15 units). The typical range for lab courses is between 1.3 wtus and 5.2 wtus, dependent on courses and number of sections assigned; the maximum is 7.5 units. Job Duties Perform laboratory or discussion section instruction for assigned courses. Create a laboratory or discussion environment conducive to learning. Use Canvas or the designated learning management system (LMS) to create assignments, prepare course materials, and deliver content. Respond to and evaluate student written work. Administer and, when necessary, proctor examinations for lecture sections. Assess student performance on lab exams/assignments and help integrate laboratory results into final course grades. Supervise small discussion groups. Assist students outside of class or laboratory hours, including office hours and appointments. Attend TA orientation sessions at the beginning of the semester and meetings scheduled by faculty or staff for coordination of course content. Show responsiveness to improvement suggestions from faculty, coordinators, and student evaluations. Complete appropriate safety training and ensure students in laboratory sections follow safety procedures. Participate in programmatic assessment procedures. Perform other assignments supportive of university instruction as required. Collaborate collegially with department members and other university employees. Qualifications Enrollment in Fresno State Chemistry Master’s Program, in good academic standing. Concurrent enrollment in at least 6 units for the semester or in two courses toward the degree. Satisfactory progress toward the degree. Ability to relate well with others and to learn how to instruct and evaluate students. Commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds. Effective written and oral communication in English.
