Position Summary:

The Department of Clinical Sciences (DCS) seeks applications for a 12‑month, tenure‑track faculty position in Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ECC). This role includes 18–24 weeks of clinical service annually within the Johnson Family Equine Hospital (JFEH) and Livestock Hospital, supporting a 24/7 service that manages high‑acuity equine and livestock cases, including surgical emergencies. The position is essential for maintaining continuous equine emergency coverage during the daytime and after hours and to support surgical care of livestock patients. This team also helps coordinate patient management with the Livestock, Equine Medicine and Surgery services.

Essential Job Duties:

Teaching :

• Teach and mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including course and curriculum development.
• The faculty member will provide hands‑on clinical instruction to third‑ and fourth‑year DVM students during ECC rotations, supervise large animal interns and ACVS/ACVIM residents, and contribute to didactic instruction within the professional and graduate curricula. Additional responsibilities include participation in journal clubs, case rounds, and continuing education programs. This level of effort is essential to maintaining instructional quality, supporting competency‑based clinical training, and meeting accreditation requirements for veterinary education and specialty training programs.

Research:

• Conduct and publish research, pursue external funding, and contribute to scholarly advancement in the field.
• As a tenure‑track position, the faculty member is expected to develop an independent research program as a clinician scientist focused on advancing knowledge in large animal emergency and critical care. This includes pursuit of extramural funding, publication of scholarly work, and mentorship of residents and graduate trainees in research activities. Effort allocation supports both foundational and translational research initiatives, leveraging institutional resources and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Clinical Service & Outreach :

• Provide service to the department, university, profession, and community in support of CSU’s mission.
• The position includes approximately 18–26 weeks of clinical service annually within the Johnson Family Equine Hospital and Livestock Hospital, supporting direct patient care, emergency surgical interventions, after‑hours coverage, and consultation with referring veterinarians. Clinical effort directly sustains hospital caseload capacity, ensures timely access to critical care services, and contributes significantly to revenue generation and regional outreach.

Minimum Qualifications:

Assistant Professor:

• The approximate commitment to clinical responsibilities will range from 18 – 24 weeks.
• DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree.
• Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care (LA) with evidence of surgical experience.

Associate Professor:

• The approximate commitment to clinical responsibilities will range from 18 – 24 weeks.
• DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree.
• Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care (LA) with evidence of surgical experience.
• Evidence of maintaining research efforts with a track record of productivity.
• 5 years of experience at the Assistant Professor rank or equivalent.

Preferred job qualifications:

Assistant/Associate Professor – Tenure track :

• Experience in instruction of DVM students.
• Experience with mentorship of clinical residents, graduate students, and other specialists in training.
• MS or PhD and/or evidence of success in developing and or maintaining an independent research program including acquisition of funding and publications.
• Evidence and experience in managing both routine and complex surgical colic patients for surgery and post-operative care.
• Evidence and experience in managing surgical emergencies in livestock.

Salary Range

• Assistant Professor $145,000 – $157,500
• Associate Professor $165,500 – $178,000
