Simulation Operations Specialist

Under the direction of the Administrative Director for the Clinical Simulation and Education Center, the Simulation Operation Specialist will serve an essential role in simulation programs in the Simulation Center at the Interprofessional Health Sciences Campus. This in-person role will provide hands on expertise to facilitate and support simulation experiences. The Operations Specialist will prepare, maintain, and facilitate repair of simulator software and hardware and task trainers and related items for enhanced realism. The Operation Specialist works to ensure the smooth operation of every aspect of each simulation experience from start to finish. Customer service skills are essential component of this role since simulation experiences are offered to current and future students, guests and visitors, and alumni of the University. Duties and Responsibilities Ensure the smooth operation of simulation experiences including developing technology infrastructure as required based on the objectives of the events. Serve as simulator operator by programming, testing, running, and video capturing scenarios, assuring that the facility and equipment is set up for teaching and assessment sessions. Program and maintain manikin-based simulation software and equipment for all simulation sessions. Be a technology resource for standardized patients, students, and faculty during simulation experiences. Be a liaison to faculty and for accessing the recording systems and archived simulation recordings. Procure materials and consumable supplies to support simulation experiences, as needed. (40% of time) Prepare spaces, equipment, simulators, for enhanced realism. This may include set-up with medical equipment, moulage, case materials for use in the simulation. Participate in shared tasks related to preparation of task trainers, maintenance of simulation equipment, organization of equipment, inventory control, and laundry management for the building. Train faculty and other Simulation Center staff in the operational aspects and equipment of simulation. (25% of time) Facilitate and conduct routine maintenance and install software and hardware upgrades and maintain functionality of manikin components as directed by manufacturer support. Troubleshoot equipment as needed. Participate in technical training as necessary; attend conferences to stay current with simulation technology. (10% of time) Create innovative ideas, evaluate new equipment, and identify opportunities for technological improvement and integration into healthcare education. Communicate in a positive, professional manner with faculty instructors, students and stakeholders of the Simulation Center. Serve as a liaison between IT and the Hackensack Meridian Health School of Medicine. Assist with other special projects, open house and other initiatives as needed. (10% of time) Establishes and maintains vital records and statistics as they pertain to simulation and assist in securing all data according to university IT, Seton Hall University, and Clinical Simulation and Education Center policies and procedures. Assist in ensuring HIPAA and FERPA rules are followed. (5% of time) Support simulation programming for research-related activities that are initiated by the academic departments or are funded through grants. These activities may take place in the evenings or on weekends with advanced notice. To comply with these off-hour requirements, the individual will be expected to have certification in Healthcare Simulation (10% of time). Desired Skills Specialized knowledge or training: Understand the use and operation of different simulator technologies ranging from anatomic models and task trainers to screen-based simulations to full body patient simulators and virtual reality surgical simulators. Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging technologies, including basic theory, design and implementation. Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology. Knowledge of the healthcare documentation systems. Analytical: Ability to assess, troubleshoot and fix equipment failures in a timely fashion. Ability to work well under pressure, set priorities and make critical decisions. Strong analytical and problem solving skills with creativity and flexibility in designing innovative approaches to solving problems. Project/process management: Ability to work with limited supervision. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills. Dedicated attention to detail as well as the ability to maintain confidentiality of work-related information is required. Demonstrate the ability to use sound independent judgment. Demonstrate effective coordination, prioritization and planning skills. Computer/technical: Proficiency with a variety simulation equipment, hardware and software. Working knowledge of computer functionality, telecommunications, audio and video equipment. Ability to quickly learn new technology. Clerical/secretarial: Proficiency in MS software applications including MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Internet, and database use. Equipment operation: Proficiency in the operation of simulation equipment. Experience with or willingness to learn Laerdal, METI, Gaumard, SimuLab and other simulation systems and equipment. Written communications: Strong written communication skills. Able to communicate in an effective and professional manner with supervisors, co-workers, faculty, vendors, and students within the College of Nursing and other University departments. Oral communications: Strong verbal communication skills. Able to verbally communicate in an effective and professional manner with supervisors, co-workers, faculty, vendors, and students within the College of Nursing and other University departments. Other: Excellent interpersonal and human relationship skills. Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, students, and the general public. Demonstrate the ability to exercise discretion and ensure a high-level of confidentiality especially as it pertain to HIPAA and FERPA. Working Conditions Professional office setting with a heavy workload in an academic and simulation environment. Occasional pressures associated with short lead times, conflicting priorities, and the complex nature of the simulation center and functions of academic centers. Physical conditions involve extensive sitting, giving of tours on short notice, use of a computer, and ability to manipulate equipment (high and low fidelity simulation). Flexibility in schedule required. Must be available for some early mornings, occasional evenings and weekend work. Required Qualifications Bachelors degree in health profession, education, simulation or related area of study, or an Associates degree in a relevant area of study with a minimum of 5 years of professional work experience in a health‑related setting. CPR certification. Ability to work under pressure and high impact environments. Excellent communication, team member, leadership experience. Desired Qualifications Masters Degree in related field. Certification from Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Previous healthcare simulation experience. Technical certifications. Previous experience as a healthcare clinician or employment in a healthcare setting.
