Job Description

The Collection Development and Scholarly Communications Librarian provides leadership for collection development, electronic resource management, scholarly communications, and research impact services in support of clinicians, researchers, faculty, staff, and trainees across Shriners Children. The position is responsible for evaluating, managing, and improving library resources and services that support pediatric specialty care, research, and education. Working collaboratively with research leadership, clinicians, investigators, educators, library colleagues, and institutional partners, this position advances access to information, supports scholarly publishing and research dissemination, and ensures library collections and services align with organizational priorities and evolving user needs.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead collection development activities for library resources across all formats, with a primary focus on electronic journals, databases, e-books, clinical decision support tools, and biomedical information resources.
• Evaluate the relevance, quality, utilization, and cost-effectiveness of collections to ensure alignment with organizational goals and user needs.
• Recommend acquisitions, renewals, cancellations, and collection enhancements based on data-driven assessments and stakeholder input.
• Manage relationships with vendors, including product demonstrations, trials, pricing negotiations, and license evaluations.
• Monitor clinical, educational, and research priorities to ensure library resources effectively support patient care, learning, and research initiatives.
• Analyze usage data, cost-per-use metrics, and collection performance indicators to inform strategic decision-making and reporting.
• Support access to electronic resources through discovery platforms, knowledge bases, authentication systems, proxy services, and related library technologies.
• Assist with the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of electronic resources and library systems.
• Provide guidance on scholarly publishing, open access models, author rights, copyright compliance, Creative Commons licensing, and research dissemination strategies.
• Support investigators, clinicians, faculty, staff, and trainees in meeting public access requirements and funder compliance expectations.
• Advise researchers on enhancing publication visibility, tracking citation metrics, managing researcher identifiers, and demonstrating research impact.
• Stay current on emerging trends in scholarly communications, open science, research metrics, artificial intelligence applications, and information dissemination practices.
• Develop and deliver educational materials, workshops, training programs, and online resources related to scholarly publishing and research impact.
• Promote best practices for the responsible dissemination, preservation, and accessibility of scholarly work.
• Partner with clinicians, researchers, educators, information technology teams, research administration staff, and library colleagues to advance information services and resource accessibility.
• Participate in institutional committees, cross-functional projects, and strategic initiatives that support organizational objectives.
• Conduct outreach efforts to increase awareness, engagement, and utilization of library services and resources.
• Assist users in identifying and accessing information resources that support clinical care, education, and research activities.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in health sciences librarianship, scholarly communications, collection development, and information access.
• Contribute to educational initiatives that strengthen information literacy, evidence-based practice, and research support services.
• Support acquisitions, invoice processing, budget monitoring, collection reporting, and maintenance of operational documentation.
• Assist in the development and continuous improvement of policies, procedures, workflows, and library services.
• Serve as a liaison with vendors, publishers, and technology partners to resolve resource management and access issues.
• Maintain professional expertise through continuing education, professional associations, conferences, and ongoing learning opportunities.
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals.
  
  

Required Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in ALA-accredited Library and Information Science or equivalent
• Additional Graduate Education in Health Sciences, Informatics, Education or related field
• 3+ years collection development, acquisitions, serials or electronic resources
• 3+ years scholarly communications or research support services
• 3+ years academic medical or research library environment

Preferred Qualifications:

• Additional Graduate Education in Health Sciences, Informatics, Education or related field

Compensation is determined based on years of relevant experience and departmental equity.
