Position Highlights:
Unified School District (USD) #1 follows a 12-month school calendar.
First shift, Monday – Friday.
Full time, 35 hours per week.
Candidates selected for hire, are required to attend a fourteen (14) week training at the CTDOC Training Academy.
*Salary Note: Salary details are derived from the P-3B EB 35 Hour Pay Plan: ( Candidates new to the State of Connecticut will start on ‘Step one’ of the pay plan at $66,978.
Your Role: The Connecticut Department of Correction Unified School District #1 is dedicated to providing quality educational programs for incarcerated individuals. Academic knowledge, vocational competencies and life skills integrated with technology are offered to students in a positive environment to foster lifelong learning, multicultural awareness and a successful transition to society. Correctional Transition Instructor Duties:
Delivering instruction in job skills, life skills, academic remediation, and transition services, including resume writing, interviewing, and computer software use.
Guiding students and inmates in educational and vocational planning by assessing academic levels, coordinating GED testing, and providing individualized, small group, and whole support.
Maintaining case records, provided information on community resources and training opportunities, and cover classes in the absence of regular teachers to ensure continuous program delivery.
C onducting intake interviews.
Supervising students in groups or individually when teacher is temporarily absent from classroom during school day.
Assisting teacher in routine, necessary, school-related duties.

• Strong knowledge of educational, vocational, and higher‑education counseling programs and techniques. • Ability to teach, train, and support diverse learners using individualized approaches. • Ability to build community resources and collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines. • Excellent interpersonal skills and flexibility in adapting to changing schedules and environments.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Correction, Education Division, this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the development of job and life skills and transition services for inmates.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Provides instruction to inmates in areas of job skills development, educational placement and programs and transition services;
Arranges for inmates to participate in college courses;
Tracks inmate progress;
Develops job skills for assigned group of inmates;
Participates in career planning and development;
Assists with job training;
Provides life skills instruction;
Evaluates inmate's abilities, skills, interests and vocational aptitudes and matches with job compatibility;
Provides developmental direction to inmates in areas of education and vocational planning;
Analyzes demographic and program information;
Provides information about occupations, job and training opportunities and support services available in the community;
Coordinates within the community job opportunities and assists in transition within the community;
Identifies and develops community resources;
Provides instruction in resume writing, interviewing skills and utilization of computer software;
Maintains case records;
Provides one-on-one and small group tutorial assistance;
Analyzes and interprets computer generated reports;
May prepare narrative and statistical reports;
Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience in career development, placement and/or counseling, educational guidance counseling or vocational counseling.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
A Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, vocational or educational guidance or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience.
Successful completion of a Connecticut Careers Trainee program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience providing instruction to students.
Experience tracking student progress and preparing narrative and statistical reports.
Experience with training or instructing job readiness courses including resume writing, interviewing skills, and utilization of computer software.
Experience with teaching a diverse group of people.
Experience working in a correctional institution, detention center, or similarly structured environment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification by the time of permanent appointment.
Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation and fingerprinting of each candidate will be made prior to appointment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates.
