Summary
Our client is seeking a professional, hands-on Senior Accountant responsible for the accurate and timely completion of the month end close process for assigned utility entities including journal entries, reconciliations, fixed assets, capital projects, intercompany activity, account/budget analysis, and variance explanations. The position should have strong analytical and critical thinking skills, knowledge of GAAP, entity level reporting of multiple entities, financial statement analysis and be proficient in ERP systems.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the full month end close process for several water and wastewater utilities.
• Prepare monthly balance sheet and general ledger account reconciliations such as customer utility accounts receivables, customer cash reconciliation, regulatory assets and liabilities, accrued expenses, etc. and determining action plans to resolve reconciling differences.
• Prepare and post monthly journal entries including accruals, accounts receivable/revenue, cash, bad debt, franchise taxes, etc.
• Analyze account activity and investigate unusual or unexpected balances.
• Review the balance sheet and income statements for accuracy and completeness.
• Prepare monthly variance analysis and explain significant fluctuations.
• Prepare fixed asset and regulatory liability general ledger reports for submission to the regulatory fixed asset consultant on a quarterly basis.
• Account for construction-in-progress to record monthly capitalized interest by project.
• Support the accounting for operating expenses, repairs and maintenance, capital expenses, project costs, and other operating expenses.
• Assist with uploading annual budgets into the ERP system.
• Assist with inventory reconciliation on a quarterly basis.
• Perform bad debt analysis for responsible utilities on a quarterly basis.
• Ensure that all accounting entries are prepared accurately and in line with corporate deadlines.
• Maintain consolidated balance sheet roll-forwards for audit purposes.
• Assist with acquisitions, new utility integrations, as needed.
• Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
• Recommend and implement improvements to existing processes and systems.
• Ensure the timely and accurate reporting of all financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
• Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics, as needed.
• Assist with the provision of information to auditors, tax preparers, regulators, outside parties, etc.
• Participate in a wide variety of special projects and compile a variety of special reports.
• Communicate with co-workers, management, clients, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
