Correctional Officer

Overview Correctional Officer position at Columbia River Correctional Institution in Portland, Oregon with relocation assistance available. This is an entry‑level role with on‑the‑job training through the Basic Corrections Course (BCC) and a probationary period. Responsibilities Work in a team setting to maintain order within the institution, enforce rules and regulations, and provide care to ensure safety and security. Help adults in custody be orderly and follow agency guidelines and standards; monitor activities and supervise work assignments. Conduct cell checks and searches of adults in custody and living quarters for contraband; settle disputes and enforce discipline as required. Observe, inspect, and report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards; participate in routine inspections. Attend Basic Corrections Course (BCC) and complete on‑the‑job training, with training eligible for college credit toward a degree. Operate within a provisional probationary period with hours and shifts subject to institution needs and labor contracts; participate in the Field Training Evaluation Program (FTEP). Qualifications Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED Be 21 years of age or older U.S. citizen Meet DPSST physical standards Reading comprehension, report writing, and retention abilities Satisfactorily complete an ODOC background investigation (OAR 259-008-0015) Special Qualifications Pass NTN test with a minimum score of 70% in all areas Good employee work history and law‑abiding behavior Pass psychological evaluation and risk assessment as required by HB 2936 No evidence of substance abuse; proficient with computers; valid driver’s license Applicants and employees are subject to testing for prohibited drugs Preferred Skills and Attributes Ability to work as a team member and communicate effectively with staff Demonstrated integrity, good judgment, and the ability to manage tense situations Attention to detail, good grammar, and comprehension of written content Experience in a public safety occupation is desirable Training and Development Basic Corrections Course (BCC) certified by the Department of Public Safety and Standards Training (DPSST) On‑the‑job training including classroom, online courses, health and fitness classes, force skills training, and FTEP Benefits The salary range listed is for non‑PERS qualifying applicants; PERS qualifying applicants may receive an adjusted range (up to +6.95%).
