Compensation The City of Beverly Hills is offering a $45,000 signing bonus for qualified lateral police officers. Candidates who meet minimum qualifications but lack one year of satisfactory full‑time employment will receive a $35,000 signing bonus. Who We Are The City of Beverly Hills has a long‑standing reputation for providing superior customer service to residents, businesses, and visitors. This characteristic, combined with outstanding staff in all departments, has been a hallmark of success for this high‑performance organization. The department is a leader in early response times, and its dedicated officers work with the community to keep neighborhoods problem‑free. The BHPD values its reputation as an agency that earns the public’s trust through efficient, impartial police service. What We’re Looking For The City of Beverly Hills Police Department seeks highly motivated and qualified candidates for the position of Lateral Police Officer. The lateral officer performs duties to protect life and property within the city, maintains law and order, responds to emergency calls, patrols the city enforcing criminal and traffic laws, performs background investigations, and may perform training duties. Distinguishing Characteristics Incumbents appointed to this class will have related work experience and possess law‑enforcement training. Initially, incumbents are assigned to patrol and work under close supervision. As experience is gained, incumbents perform the full range of duties with increasing independence. Special assignments in police‑related functions may be available to experienced incumbents, depending on the needs of the department. Appointment to a special assignment is at the discretion of the Police Chief. Salary and Benefits This position is represented by the Police Officers’ Association and is covered by the negotiated terms and conditions of that Association’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The position is set to receive a 6% increase effective 07/01/2026. Additional details may be found in the POA MOU. Selection Process All applicants must submit clear, concise, and complete information regarding their qualifications for the position, including responses to all supplemental questions. Resumes alone will not be accepted in lieu of the application or supplemental application materials. Application Review Please attach all education, training, courses, and/or certificates required as part of the minimum qualifications to your application. This includes either a diploma, official or unofficial transcript, and/or Form DD‑214 to verify Track 1 or Track 2 as outlined under the Experience and Training minimum requirements, as well as your POST Basic certificate. Applicants who fail to provide documentation verifying that they meet the minimum requirements will not continue in the recruitment process. Assessment of Supplemental Questionnaire Respond in full to all supplemental questions. Responses such as "see resume" will not be accepted and will result in disqualification. The supplemental questionnaire may be used as an assessment tool to determine the most qualified applicants for this position. Performance Exam Candidates who are successful on the Written Exam will participate in a Physical Agility Test (PAT), which is held at Rio Hondo Community College. Oral Interviews Candidates who pass the PAT will be invited to an oral interview. Oral interview dates are continuous, and candidates will be notified of the interview date after they successfully pass the PAT. Eligibility List The candidates who successfully pass the selection process will earn placement on an Eligibility List. The Eligibility List may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification, as defined by the duration of the list at the time the list is established. The Eligibility List established for any recruitment may also be used to fill a lower‑level position. Background Check A thorough background check, including a polygraph, will be conducted on the successful candidate. On completion of final interviews, the selected candidate will receive a multi‑page "In‑depth Personal History Form" and a pre‑investigative questionnaire to be completed and returned at the first meeting with a background investigator. Failure to provide the required information results in automatic disqualification. The candidate is required to undergo a pre‑employment polygraph examination. The polygraph examination is designed to show an applicant as truthful. All questions posed during the examination are discussed with the applicant prior to testing. The background investigation includes personal contacts, phone contacts with references, school teachers, administrators, employers, co‑workers, neighbors, and unlisted references, as well as checks of the candidate’s current financial institution, past credit history, social media accounts, and criminal history. Proof of Education If educational units, a degree, transcripts, or certificate is required, upload a copy of any license(s), official or unofficial transcript(s), degree(s), and/or related employment documents to your Government Jobs account at the time of application and before the closing date unless otherwise specified by Human Resources.
