Law Enforcement Deputy Sheriff (Non-Certified)

Description Applicants commit to completing the Basic Abilities Test (if applicable) and the Physical Agility Test, and to attending all required classes necessary to successfully complete the Basic Recruit Law Enforcement Academy and pass the FDLE State of Florida Certification Examination. The Deputy Sheriff, under the supervision of a Sergeant, performs generalized law enforcement and public safety work in the protection of life and property and the execution of orders issued through the jurisdiction of the Sheriff of Martin County. This role works under general supervision and requires considerable judgment, initiative, and skill in a variety of situations. Responsibilities Promote public safety in patrol area. Respond to all dispatch calls in a timely manner. Investigate illegal or suspicious activities. Respond to a variety of calls requiring different levels of intervention, from personal counseling to use of force. Take control of accident scenes to maintain traffic flow, assist victims, and investigate causes. Observe traffic and initiate traffic stops. Perform checks on dwellings, buildings and grounds to prevent damage, theft, or vandalism. Respond to calls for assistance, administer first aid at crime or accident scenes and secure scenes to preserve evidence. Verify that proper legal charges have been made against law offenders. Execute arrest warrants, locate and take persons into custody while preserving rights and ensuring officer safety. Record daily activities and submit logs. Prepare related reports and paperwork for appropriate authorities. Transport or escort prisoners and defendants to courtrooms, prisons, or medical facilities. Testify in court regarding work activities. Place people in protective custody. Assist in the presentation of departmental training programs. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Florida driver's license. Certification from the Department of Law Enforcement Police Standards and Training Commission. Completion of Basic Abilities Test (if applicable) and Physical Agility Test. Enrollment or completion of a Law Enforcement Academy. Physical Demands Frequent stooping, bending, manual dexterity, fine motor skills, color perception, hearing, vision, and the ability to walk for extended periods. Must be able to defend self, defend others, or control physically resistant individuals. Work Environment Varied, twelve‑hour shifts including nighttime and weekend work. Work performed in controlled and occasionally high‑stress environments. During natural disasters, major accident or crime scenes, the officer may be on scene to assist personnel and victims at the discretion of the officer in charge.
