RN Palliative Care

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in Palliative Care provides specialized nursing care for adult patients with intensive symptom management needs at the end of life. This role requires strong IV and wound care skills, compassionate patient advocacy, and the ability to manage complex patient and family situations. The nurse will perform astute assessments, administer medications including patient-controlled analgesia, and support general medicine overflow patients. A minimum of two years recent experience in palliative or acute medical/surgical nursing and current BLS certification are required. Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care focused on symptom management for end-of-life patients.
• Perform patient assessments and advocate for patients unable to communicate effectively.
• Administer medications including use and monitoring of patient-controlled analgesia pumps.
• Deliver wound care and maintain IV therapy competency.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement treatment plans.
• Manage complex patient and family needs with compassion and professionalism.
• Support care for general medicine overflow patients as needed.
• Maintain accurate documentation and comply with hospital policies and procedures.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active New York State Registered Nurse license.
• Minimum of two years recent experience in palliative care or acute medical/surgical nursing.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• Strong IV insertion and wound care skills.
• Ability to perform astute clinical assessments and patient advocacy.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience with patient-controlled analgesia pumps.
• Certification in Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN).

Special Considerations:

• Work involves managing patients with complex and intensive symptom management needs at end of life.
• Must demonstrate compassion and ability to support families in crisis.
• Telemetry experience is not required.
• May be required to work weekends, holidays, and be on call as per unit needs.

Scheduling:

• 36 or 48 hour shifts on straight night schedule.
• Shift assignments may include weekends, holidays, and on-call duties.
