The City of Gainesville’s Billing and Collections division is looking for a customer service oriented individual who has experience in banking or accounting and knows thier way around a computer to join our dynamic team and be the next outstanding next customer service representative! Duties Customer service representatives spend their days interacting with the public providing top notch customer service while receiving and accounting for cash and negotiable instruments for payments of City fines and bills. Typical duties include: Receiving and processing monies for fines Researching account problems through records Processing and collecting agency payments Correcting, verifying, and reconciling all cash and mail receipts Discussing billing and/or other charges with customers and explaining departmental policies, pertinent rules, and regulations Posting payments to various files via computer terminals To be considered for this position you must have a high school or acceptable equivalency diploma, and two years experience in work with extensive public contact. It is preferred that your experience be in banking or accounting. Also, it would be great if you have had experience as a cashier and using an on-line billing computer system. NATURE OF WORK This is clerical work receiving and accounting for cash and negotiable instruments for payment of utility bills and parking fines, and performing varied customer services, and establishing and maintaining utility customer accounts. CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under limited supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its lack of supervisory duties and from lower classes by its emphasis on customer service. Minimum Requirements Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, and two years experience in work with extensive public contact, preferably in banking, accounting, or using on-line computer system, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. LICENSES/CERTIFICATES None. NOTES None. Essential Job Functions Receives and processes utility payments and deposits received from customers in person and through the mail. Assists in maintaining accurate work record and files of customer accounts, records, reports, and adjustments. Receives and processes monies for parking violation fines. Researches account problems through records. Processes collection agency payments. Corrects, verifies, and reconciles all cash and mail receipts. Discusses billing and/or other charges with customers and explains departmental policies, pertinent rules, and regulations. Posts payments to various files via computer terminals. Attends work on continuous and regular basis. Non-essential Job Functions Reviews, routes, and/or processes correspondence and assists with record disbursement. Performs functions found in the office assistant classifications. Performs other related duties as assigned. SELECTION FACTORS Considerable knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment. Knowledge of principles of cash collection and control, customer accounting, and on-line computer system. Basic knowledge of City utility operations, ordinances, policies, and procedures. Skill in handling large sums of cash without loss. Skill in use of computer terminals, terminal printers, calculators, 10-key adding machines, microfilm and microfiche equipment. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to work effectively under pressure. Ability to operate mail processing equipment.
