Job Description

The custodial worker provides routine and special cleaning services throughout a university-based community while supporting event setup and takedown for residents and the general public. This role promotes a welcoming, service-oriented environment by ensuring clean, safe, and well-maintained spaces and by delivering an inviting experience for residents, guests, and colleagues.

Responsibilities

• Provide routine and special cleaning services throughout the community to maintain a clean, safe, and inviting environment.
• Set up and take down events in various meeting rooms for residents and outside groups, including arranging chairs, tables, and audio/video equipment.
• Champion the organization's mission, vision, and core values by integrating them into daily work and interactions.
• Actively participate in the department's standard training program to build and improve custodial skills.
• Deliver an inviting experience for residents by viewing services as something done for them, not to them.
• Interact with residents, guests, and co-workers in a gracious, attentive, and courteous manner at all times.
• Operate special floor care equipment in public areas and residential units safely and in accordance with manufacturers' guidelines.
• Clean assigned areas thoroughly, including restrooms, common areas, and other designated spaces.
• Complete minor maintenance tasks as assigned to support the overall upkeep of the facility.
• Shampoo carpets, wax floors, wash windows, and remove trash as part of regular and special cleaning routines.
• Ensure proper use of green cleaning solutions, chemicals, and cleaning supplies in line with safety and environmental standards.
• Remain knowledgeable of emergency procedures and respond calmly and appropriately in emergency situations.
• Seek opportunities to improve the quality of work, relationships, and processes within the department.
• Welcome regular feedback from supervisors, peers, and customers and apply it to meet or exceed expectations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to support the smooth operation of the community.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 1 year of experience in custodial, cleaning, or a related field is preferred.
• Demonstrated skills in operating custodial and cleaning equipment and tools.
• Knowledge of green cleaning solutions, chemicals, and pertinent cleaning supplies.
• Ability to read and understand labels and follow written instructions and safety guidelines.
• Strong customer focus with the ability to provide courteous and attentive service.
• Effective communication skills to interact clearly and respectfully with residents, guests, and team members.
• Ability to collaborate and work effectively as part of a team.
• Action-oriented approach with a willingness to take initiative and complete tasks efficiently.
• Nimble learning mindset, with the ability to quickly absorb new information and apply training in daily work.
• Attention to detail in cleaning tasks and event setups.

Work Environment

This role is based in a university environment that includes residential and public spaces, meeting rooms, and common areas. You will work with a variety of custodial tools and equipment, including floor care machines, carpet shampooers, and audio/video equipment used for event setups. The position involves physical tasks such as lifting, moving furniture, and standing or walking for extended periods. You will use green cleaning solutions and chemicals in accordance with safety guidelines and manufacturer instructions. The schedule may include work during events and activities, requiring flexibility to support both routine cleaning and special functions in a professional, service-focused setting.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Davis, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
