Billing Specialist (Accounting)

Position Overview A growing, project-driven company in the Columbia, MD area is seeking a Staff Accountant / Accounting Associate to join its collaborative accounting and operations team. This is a highly visible role supporting billing, collections, operational accounting, and broader accounting functions within a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate enjoys solving problems, digging into discrepancies, wearing multiple hats, and contributing to a small, team-oriented company culture. Responsibilities Manage customer invoicing, billing support, collections, and account follow-up Research and resolve billing discrepancies, payment issues, and transactional variances Support sales tax filings, disbursements, and operational accounting activities Assist with reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close support Work closely with project managers, operations, vendors, and leadership teams Maintain accuracy across accounting records, reporting, and financial transactions Support process improvements and help strengthen accounting workflows Qualifications Education, or college coursework in Accounting, Finance, or related field required (Bachelor's highly desirable) Experience within accounting, billing, AR/AP, or operational accounting environments Understanding of debits/credits, reconciliations, and accounting transaction flow Experience handling billing corrections, discrepancy resolution, or account research strongly preferred Excel skills required ERP/accounting systems experience required Construction, project accounting, specialty subcontractor, manufacturing, or project-based industry experience is a plus, but not required Years of experience: 3 years Experience level: Experienced Education: Associate (required) Salary and Working Hours Salary: $79,999.99 - $95,000 per year Shift: First Work hours: 8:30 AM - 5 PM Skills Billing (1 year of experience is required) General Ledger Billing discrepancy resolution Account Reconciliation Credit & Collections Verbal Communication Invoices Accounting Coursework AR Billing AIA billing Benefits Comprehensive benefits package includes medical, prescription, dental, vision, AD&D, and life insurance offerings, short-term disability, and a 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
