Job Title: Project Manager – Fabrication and Machining Shop

Job Description

This Project Manager role oversees and drives complex fabrication and machining projects from contract award through delivery in a regulated manufacturing environment. The position focuses on building and maintaining integrated project schedules and budgets, coordinating cross-functional teams, and ensuring projects meet cost, schedule, quality, and contractual requirements. You will work closely with engineering, procurement, quality, manufacturing, suppliers, and customers to deliver high-quality products on time and within budget.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain integrated project schedules using tools such as Microsoft Project or Primavera P6, updating progress weekly and forecasting completion dates.

• Build and manage project budgets based on Sales Turnover documentation, estimates, labor plans, purchase commitments, and customer contracts, establishing baseline cost and schedule.

• Monitor project financial performance by reviewing labor hours, material costs, outside processing, and purchase orders, comparing actuals versus budget, and forecasting Estimate at Completion (EAC).

• Prepare and present monthly financial performance updates and executive project status reports to senior leadership, including schedule, cost, risks, and forecast completion.

• Coordinate project execution across engineering, procurement, quality, manufacturing, shipping, and customer teams to remove roadblocks and maintain schedule commitments.

• Develop fabrication and production plans that support on-time delivery, including sequencing machining, welding, non-destructive examination (NDE), heat treatment, coating, testing, inspections, and shipment.

• Review customer contracts, specifications, technical drawings, and requirements to ensure compliance, identify flow-down requirements, and coordinate implementation across departments.

• Manage project risks, issues, and change requests by identifying risks early, developing mitigation plans, and escalating issues appropriately when needed.

• Lead cross-functional project meetings, including internal kickoff meetings, weekly production meetings, and customer status reviews, while tracking action items and documenting meeting minutes.

• Manage change by evaluating engineering changes, assessing cost and schedule impacts, coordinating change implementation, and maintaining configuration control throughout the project lifecycle.

• Coordinate and manage supplier performance and long-lead procurement activities, including outside processing, tracking supplier delivery and quality, expediting critical materials, and resolving supplier issues that affect the schedule.

• Conduct regular customer meetings, prepare and deliver project status reports, manage customer action items, and coordinate contract changes and schedule impacts to maintain strong customer relationships.

• Ensure understanding and application of NQA-1 quality requirements, including quality records, configuration management, document control, hold points, traceability, and participation in Corrective Action Program (CAP) activities.

• Effectively communicate with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders at all levels to ensure alignment, transparency, and successful project execution.

• Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel, and ERP systems to manage schedules, budgets, materials, and reporting.

• Manage multiple complex manufacturing projects simultaneously in a regulated environment, maintaining focus on safety, quality, schedule, and cost.

Essential Skills

• Proven project management experience managing projects from contract award through delivery, preferably in regulated manufacturing environments.

• Strong ability to develop and maintain integrated project schedules using Microsoft Project or Primavera P6.

• Demonstrated experience in building and managing project budgets from sales documentation, estimates, labor plans, and purchase commitments.

• Solid financial acumen, including monitoring project financial performance, comparing actuals versus budget, and forecasting Estimate at Completion (EAC).

• Experience coordinating cross-functional teams in engineering, procurement, quality, manufacturing, and shipping to drive project execution.

• Proficiency in production planning and scheduling, including fabrication strategies and sequencing machining, welding, NDE, heat treatment, coating, testing, inspections, and shipment.

• Strong skills in contract and change order management, including evaluating engineering changes and assessing cost and schedule impacts.

• Ability to manage supplier performance and long-lead procurement activities in a complex manufacturing environment.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for customer communication, internal stakeholder updates, and executive reporting.

• Demonstrated ability to drive projects forward, remove obstacles, and maintain schedule commitments.

• Self-starter with a highly collaborative working style, able to work effectively across departments.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel, and ERP systems.

• Experience working within or alongside NQA-1 or similar quality frameworks in steel fabrication or nuclear-related projects.

• Background in steel fabrication, nuclear, or other highly regulated industrial sectors is strongly preferred.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or another closely related technical discipline, or equivalent technical experience.

• Experience in regulated environments such as nuclear, aerospace, or other industries with stringent quality and documentation requirements.

• Familiarity with NQA-1 quality requirements, including quality records, configuration management, document control, hold points, traceability, and Corrective Action Program (CAP).

• Ability to interpret complex customer contracts, specifications, and technical drawings and to identify and manage flow-down requirements across departments.

• Experience preparing and presenting executive-level project status reports that clearly communicate schedule, cost, risks, and forecast completion.

• Experience conducting customer reviews and managing customer action items to maintain strong customer relationships.

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple complex manufacturing projects simultaneously.

• Experience with Primavera P6 for advanced scheduling in fabrication or machining environments is highly desirable.

Work Environment

This position is based onsite at a fabrication and machining shop in Clackamas, Oregon. The Project Manager works primarily in an office setting while maintaining regular interaction on the shop floor to coordinate production activities and monitor project progress. The environment involves close collaboration with engineering, procurement, quality, manufacturing, and supplier teams, using tools such as Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, Microsoft Excel, and ERP systems. The role operates within a regulated manufacturing setting, where adherence to quality standards, documentation requirements, and safety practices is essential. Standard business attire is typically expected in the office, with appropriate protective gear worn as needed when visiting the shop floor.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Clackamas, OR.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $57.00 - $60.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
