Counselor

The Counselor provides counseling, case management, crisis intervention, and student support services that promote student well-being, retention, persistence, and success. This position assists students in addressing personal, social, behavioral, and academic barriers that may interfere with educational achievement. The position also supports student outreach, behavioral intervention efforts, and institutional initiatives related to student engagement and success. This position may require day, evening, and occasional weekend hours and travel. Provide short-term, solution-focused counseling and support services to students experiencing personal, academic, emotional, or behavioral challenges. Conduct student intake, assessment, crisis intervention, and follow-up services as appropriate. Maintain confidential records and documentation related to counseling and student support services in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and College procedures. Refer students to appropriate campus and community resources, including mental health, healthcare, financial, academic, and social service agencies. Serve as a student advocate and assist students in navigating institutional processes and available support resources. Provide case management and ongoing support for students identified as at-risk or in distress. Collaborate with advising, financial aid, accessibility services, tutoring, faculty, and other departments to coordinate student support services. Participate in Behavioral Intervention Team ( BIT ), CARE Team, or related student support processes, as assigned. Assist in responding to incident reporters, student behavioral concerns, and students experiencing emotional distress. Develop and facilitate workshops, presentations, and outreach activities focused on wellness, stress management, resilience, mental health awareness, personal development, and student success. Promote awareness of counseling and student support services across campus. Support retention and early alert initiatives through student outreach and intervention efforts. Collect and maintain data related to counseling services, student engagement, retention, and program effectiveness. Prepare reports and assist with assessment, planning, and program review activities. Stay current on national trends, best practices, and emerging issues related to counseling, student wellness, behavioral intervention, and student success. Assist with recruitment, orientation, retention, graduation, and other College-related activities as needed. Participate in professional and staff development opportunities. Actively participate in Student Affairs planning, evaluation, and program review. Treat students and colleagues respectfully, speak to others courteously, and behave in such a way that creates a workplace environment that is marked by trustworthiness, honest but polite communication, and interpersonal interaction that are both personally cordial and professionally appropriate. Serve on committees as required. Perform other duties as assigned and other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Salary Range Salary Range Based on experience. Starting salary range $48,327 - $72,490. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Marriage and Family, Clinical Mental Health, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution. Valid, active, and unrestricted North Carolina licensure as an LCMHC , LCSW , LMFT , LCAS , or other appropriate behavioral health license, or eligibility to obtain North Carolina licensure within six months of employment. Applicants holding associate-level licensure (e.g., LCMHCA , LCSWA , LMFTA ) will be considered if they are in good standing with their respective state board and can secure external clinical supervision if not provided by the college. Skills and Abilities Ability to work or meet in the evenings and/or on weekends, with advanced notice. Strong interpersonal, counseling, and crisis response skills. Ability to manage multiple cases and priorities in a dynamic environment. Knowledge of student development theory and holistic support practices. Ability to analyze data and use it to inform decision-making. Ability to use productivity software, including a general knowledge of word processors and spreadsheets, the ability to send and receive email, and to complete and submit electronic forms. Employees are expected to perform essential computer skills (log on/off a computer, manage and organize files, print/scan forms using a copier, maintain and recall secure passwords and change password(s) routinely per College procedures). Excellent oral and written communication skills. Provide exceptional customer services with people internal and external to the institution. Preferred Qualifications A minimum of 3 years of counseling, case management, student support, behavioral intervention, or related experience. Physical Demands ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information, analyze data, make assessments, and exercise good judgment to make decisions; possess ease of mobility within the work environment and other areas of campus; and effective use of all forms of communication (oral, visual, auditory), including use of computers.
