Field Service Technician

Overview Field Service Technician at TDS Telecom. Locations: US-NY-Vernon. This role involves on-site installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases. You will have direct customer contact, proactively educate and sell TDS services and products, and demonstrate TDS solutions. This position may include services such as Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high-speed networks. A sign-on bonus is available for this position. Residence within a 60-minute drive of the Vernon, NY warehouse is required. Responsibilities Assist with and perform on-site installing, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products & services for new and existing customers. Identify location of defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and/or customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and/or construction needs. Pole climbing and operating construction equipment are required. Locate, identify, and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage. Maintain an orderly log of locate requests in the exchange area. Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities. Provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections. Respond to trouble dispatches. Assist with and provide support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements, etc.). Provide excellent customer service. Proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers. Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment. Qualifications Required Qualifications Must have and maintain a valid driver's license. Must follow the TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs. Other Qualifications Upon hire, must successfully complete customer-specific requirements, which may include a background check administered by the customer. On-call/standby responsibilities and occasional travel. Overtime may be required. Must successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum. Ability to maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating > 10,000 lbs. A+ certification and computer networking experience. Understanding of telecommunication products and services: Inside Wiring/Cable, Internet/Intranet, Bonding & Grounding, Data & Computers/Transmission Concepts, Fiber Optic Transmission, Static Sensitive Equipment, Color Codes, Structured Wiring, Video/CATV/DBS Installation, Inventory Systems, Cable Locating, Battery Maintenance, Key Systems/PBX, Centrex, Switch Maintenance, Voicemail, and related technologies. Practical knowledge of computer applications including databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, and MS Excel. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong customer service and sales skills and effective communication (verbal and written). Proven organizational skills and ability to multi-task. Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
