Field Service Technician - Heavy Equipment

Experience Required Holt CAT, the largest Caterpillar dealer of heavy construction equipment in the United States, seeks an experienced Field Service Technician for the Dallas/Fort Worth Texas Region. The technician will conduct field service repairs on dozers, backhoes, front‑end loaders and excavators, addressing emissions, hydraulics, engines, transmissions, HVAC and electrical issues. The role requires a valid driver’s license, ability to obtain a CDL Class B, a DOT medical card, good driving record, and willingness to work Monday through Friday 7 am‑5 pm with overtime as needed. Key characteristics expected in the incumbent include alignment with company values, collaboration with internal and external resources, and ongoing self‑development. Key Responsibilities Diagnose and repair heavy construction equipment using electronic and manual tools. Document all work orders accurately. Diagnose Tier 4 emission and EGR systems. Perform intermediate repairs and troubleshooting offsite with minimal supervision. Disassemble and assemble components to CAT specifications; remove and install parts. Test, adjust and verify correct operation of all repairs. Prepare service reports, order parts, and maintain clear customer records. Act as a team leader, mentoring and coaching lower‑level technicians. Participate in the quotation of work orders. Operate equipment and vehicles, maintaining necessary licenses and certificates. Maintain service vehicle inspection records, daily inspections and driver logs. Adhere to contamination control and HAZMAT regulations. Maintain all company equipment, tools and vehicles in a clean and working order. Communicate job progress to supervisors and customers as needed. Meet flat‑rate time and re‑work standards, completing tasks efficiently. Complete all assigned Technician Training Path courses and safety training on time. Project professionalism, including personal appearance, to internal and external customers. Maintain punctual and regular attendance. Perform other duties as assigned. Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Strong troubleshooting, diagnosing and repair skills for heavy construction equipment. Proficient in documentation of work orders. Knowledge of Tier 4 emissions, fuel systems, electrical and hydraulic systems. Intermediate knowledge of hydraulics, transmissions, engines, undercarriage and electrical. Competence with computer software, hardware and machine electronic systems. Excellent customer‑service skills. Proficiency with CAT ET and CAT SIS preferred. Planning and organization skills to prioritize work and manage time efficiently. Control skills for operating construction equipment or systems. Ability to operate a crane, forklift and obtain necessary certifications/licenses. Capacity to meet deadlines and work under fast‑paced, time‑constrained conditions. Skill in using hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools and mechanical‑repair equipment. Manual dexterity for precise, coordinated movements. Benefits and Requirements More than four years of heavy equipment experience required; six or more years preferred. Must be able to use CAT ET and CAT SIS 2.0. MSHA certification preferred. Air‑conditioning certification preferred. Sufficient tools for repair must be owned by the technician. No supervisory responsibilities. Travel required with possible overnight stays. Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. Physical requirements: lift and move up to 80 lb, frequent lifting, climbing ladders, operating in cramped or elevated spaces, endurance for manual work. Work environment includes exposure to machinery, noise, weather extremes, chemicals, dust, steam, high‑pressure water and high‑speed rotating equipment. Safety emphasis: wear protective gear, adhere to all safety policies, and comply with DOT rules.
