Director OF Residential Services

Job Summary Under the supervision of the CEO, the Residential Services Director provides executive-level leadership and oversight of AADAP's residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment services, including the Therapeutic Community (TC), recovery bridge housing (RBH), and related residential programs. This role is responsible for clinical quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, risk management, workforce supervision, and service integration across the residential continuum of care. The Director serves as a member of the AADAP Leadership Team and plays a critical role in agency-wide planning, policy development, cross-program integration (including outpatient services), and community partnerships, particularly those serving individuals experiencing homelessness, in coordination with City and County systems. All directors are evaluated on performance in clinical quality, compliance, financial stability, staff supervision, risk mitigation, service integration, community engagement, and fundraising support. Core Responsibilities Residential Program Leadership, Advocacy & Operations Provide overall leadership and operational oversight of residential SUD programs, ensuring alignment with DHCS Title 9, ASAM Criteria, and applicable accreditation standards. Serve as an internal and external advocate for residential SUD services, elevating the needs of clients, staff, and communities impacted by substance use, housing instability, and systemic inequities. Plan, implement, monitor, and continuously improve treatment services using data-informed quality improvement practices and a growth-oriented approach to program development. Champion client-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care models in both policy and practice. Ensure compliance with contracts, licenses, and funding requirements while advocating with funders and system partners for realistic, sustainable program expectations. Lead risk management efforts by building on staff strengths and promoting a learning culture where challenges inform innovation, growth, and improved practice. Promote an inclusive, adaptive work environment that encourages innovation, shared problem-solving, and continuous learning. Workforce Development, Growth Mindset & Succession Planning Build and sustain a high-performing residential leadership team through intentional supervision, coaching, and professional development. Model and reinforce a growth mindset by encouraging reflective practice, innovation, and continuous improvement at all levels of staff. Support staff in navigating change, complexity, and evolving regulatory and community expectations. Develop and implement succession planning strategies that strengthen internal leadership pipelines and long-term program stability. Promote staff wellness, resilience, and retention as essential components of sustainable service delivery. Financial Sustainability, Program Growth & Innovation Lead residential program budgeting and financial oversight with a focus on long-term sustainability, not just short-term balance. Identify opportunities for responsible growth, including program expansion, service enhancements, and new partnerships aligned with community needs. Collaborate with executive leadership and development staff to advocate for funding models that support quality care, workforce stability, and innovation. Support grantsmanship, contract development, and pilot initiatives that strengthen the residential continuum of care. Use financial and operational data to inform strategic decisions and adapt programs proactively in response to changing system conditions. Advocacy, Systems Engagement & Agency Leadership Represent AADAP in local, County, and City-level advocacy efforts related to SUD treatment, housing, homelessness, and behavioral health systems. Engage in cross-sector partnerships to advance policies and practices that improve access, equity, and outcomes for individuals in residential treatment. Support agency-wide strategic planning by bringing a systems-level perspective grounded in residential service delivery realities. Champion AADAP’s mission publicly through community engagement, education, and collaboration. Participate actively in fundraising and public relations efforts by connecting program impact to broader systems change and sustainability goals. Qualifications Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in behavioral health, social work, psychology, public health, human services, healthcare administration, or a related field and a minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment settings. At least five (5) years of supervisory or management experience overseeing staff, programs, or operations in residential and/or intensive treatment environments. Demonstrated experience with residential SUD program operations, including compliance, quality improvement, and workforce supervision. Working knowledge of evidence-based SUD treatment models, recovery-oriented systems of care, and regulatory requirements applicable to residential services. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, public health, healthcare administration, or a related field. Eight to twelve (8–12) years of progressively responsible experience in SUD treatment services, including significant residential program leadership, with at least seven (7) years in a supervisory capacity. Licensed or license-eligible behavioral health professional (e.g., LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, PsyD), or equivalent professional credentialing in SUD treatment or behavioral health administration. Experience overseeing multi-site or multi-program operations, budgets, and contracts. Demonstrated success leading program growth, service integration, and systems-level collaboration. Experience working with justice-involved populations and individuals experiencing homelessness. Bilingual and/or bicultural capacity reflective of Los Angeles County threshold languages. Ability to lead effectively through change, complexity, and evolving regulatory and community expectations. Physical Requirements Moderate Duty This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, and working on irregular surfaces. The position requires occasional lifting of objects over 25 pounds and frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds. Ascending and descending ladders and staircases will be more frequent.
