NESS's scholastic programs support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curricula in over 70 schools and organizations with a unique combination of on-the-water and in-the-classroom lessons intended to build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills.

NESS is the first school partner program accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and has been recognized by US Sailing as the top community sailing program in the United States. NESS serves over 9,000 students annually across New England. Since its inception, NESS has enabled more than 35,000 students to get out on the water. For more information, visit  .

Why work here

NESS SEA (STEM EDUCATION AMBASSADOR) AMERICORPS PROGRAM

The NESS SEA (STEM Education Ambassador) AmeriCorps program uses national service to engage students in STEM-based ocean adventure learning. Each year, our AmeriCorps members join a national movement of over 75,000 Americans who dedicate themselves to intensive service in communities across the country. New England Science & Sailing SEA AmeriCorps members serve to provide students with additional support, mentoring and tutoring during the academic school day. They also design and implement STEM-based, extended learning and summer programs utilizing marine science, adventure sports, and sailing as the educational platform.

NESS WORKS!

NESS offers a unique education model that empowers students with leadership, teamwork, confidence, and problem-solving skills to ensure academic success. Our STEM-based curriculum includes using marine science, sailing, power boating, and adventure sports as learning platforms, on and off the water, for students from all walks of life.

LEARNING WITH NESS

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND MINDSETS MATTER

Various studies have found mindsets and social-emotional learning (SEL) skills matter as much, or more, than socioeconomic background for underperforming schools because those factors positively impact student achievement. SEL outcomes data for middle school students exposed to NESS programs when compared to a control group show that NESS students are more likely to show gains in:

• 8x more CONFIDENCE

• 5x more PERSEVERANCE

• 4x more TEAMWORK

• 2x more SELF-CONTROL

NESS’s works with educators and schools to help ALL K-12 students reach their academic and personal potentials. Those goals are especially important in creating opportunities for disadvantaged students who often reside within under-resourced urban school districts.

SCHOOL CAN BE EXCITING WHEN YOU CREATE A LOVE OF LEARNING

NESS enhances the STEM student experience with experiential learning coupled with non-cognitive skills such as communication, teamwork, self-control, leadership, and perseverance. Students discover confidence in themselves, build a love of learning, and achieve greater academic achievement by exposure to the NESS education experience. (Goodman Research)

PARTNERSHIPS TO EMPOWER SCHOOLS

Schools partner with NESS to bring after school programs, half-day field expeditions, and in-school experiences with NESS educators. Educators explore different ways to use the outdoor environment around them to increase student engagement, as well as investigate experiential methods of problem-based learning, place-based learning, active learning, and other methods used in experiential learning. Applying the course concepts in their classrooms by developing curriculum, designing and implementing student learning assessment tools, and applying experiential learning elements throughout their teaching practice provides students with innovative STEM lessons, SEL skills, and hands-on experiments in the classroom and on the water.
