Employment Type: Full-time, salaried, exempt

Work Arrangement: Primarily on-site, with limited remote flexibility for administrative tasks

Reports To: Board of Directors (until an Executive Director is appointed)

Position Summary

Shard Villa is seeking an organized, proactive, and people-focused People and Operations Director to oversee the day-to-day human resources and organizational functions of our senior living community. This position is ideal for an experienced professional who is comfortable wearing multiple hats and who enjoys creating structure, solving problems, developing employees, and improving organizational systems.

The Director will serve as a key member of the leadership team, working closely with the Board of Directors and Treasurer to ensure Shard Villa remains a safe, welcoming, well-functioning environment for residents and employees alike. This role carries significant responsibility and autonomy in building systems that improve staffing, accountability, culture, and compliance.

Primary Duties

•      Manage all staff and their schedules, including coordinating coverage for call-outs or no-shows

•      Own recruitment, retention, performance monitoring, and replacement for all staff roles

•      Recommend organizational structure changes to the Board of Directors

•      Establish and enforce clear standards for attendance, professionalism, communication, accountability, and workplace conduct

•      Work collaboratively with nursing staff to ensure the highest standards of dignified, personalized, family-like care

•      Build a workplace where employees feel valued, supported, and accountable

•      Propose employee handbook updates to the Board of Directors

•      Set the human resources budget with the Treasurer and Board, and manage costs within it

•      Research market benchmarks for employee benefits and recommend options to the Board

•      Maintain compliance with applicable federal and Vermont employment laws

•      Attend monthly Board of Directors meetings and other Board committee meetings as requested

Culture & Accountability

Beyond day-to-day HR administration, this person will help identify recurring organizational problems and develop practical solutions, working with leadership to address workplace issues consistently and fairly. Regularly soliciting employee feedback, monitoring turnover and staffing trends, and recommending changes to policy, scheduling, or compensation when appropriate are all part of building a workplace where employees feel valued, supported, and accountable.

Compensation & Benefits

Starting Salary: $65,000–$85,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and scope of responsibility

Performance Bonus: Eligible for performance-based bonus opportunities tied to mutually agreed-upon deliverables and organizational goals

Sign-On / Relocation: Relocation assistance and sign-on bonus terms available, to be determined based on candidate circumstances and experience

Paid Time Off: 20 combined vacation/sick days per year (minimum 10 vacation days), plus federal holidays

Annual Review: The Board conducts an annual performance, scope-of-duties, and compensation review

Work Week: Standard 40-hour week; occasional additional hours may be required, but the role is not structured for sustained 60–80 hour weeks

Qualifications

•      Experience in HR, operations, facilities, senior living, healthcare administration, or related management

•      Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills; sound professional judgment

•      Ability to manage confidential information, competing priorities, and independent workloads

•      Ability to hold staff accountable fairly and consistently across all levels of the organization

•      Preferred: relevant bachelor's degree, HR certification, experience in a regulated/senior-living setting, and familiarity with Vermont employment law
